Taking dress on a plane?

I'm flying home with my dress for my bridal portraits. It's a southwest flight and last time I was on a SW plane I felt like the overhead bins were really small.

Has anyone else done this? I'm really nervous about it. Did you have any problems fitting it in the over head bin? Did security give you crap?

I still haven't booked the flight because I'm still considering whether or not the 6 hour drive is worth it to make sure my dress is safe.

Re: Taking dress on a plane?

  • I would call the airline and ask them about the best way to transport your wedding dress.  My daughter is flying southwest over the summer and I had lots of questions and they were very friendly and helpful.  I am sure they have worked with brides bringing their dresses on board so they should have some experience with this.

I flew with a bridesmaid dress one time, and the stewardess put it in the front in a hanging closet.  It wasn't SW though.  I would call and see if there is a place on the plane that you could hang it.

<div>I flew Delta when I brought the dress from Fl to Atl and they did the same for me. Call SW to be sure but usually if you let them know at the gate they will hang it for you.</div>

My FI is a pilot - not for SW, but I know that on many planes there is a spot to hang the dress unless you are going on a smaller plane.  I would definitely give SW a call - they seem to be pretty helpful most of the time :)

I flew home with my dress on Southwest. I made sure to get an A boarding pass. My dress wasn't tons poofy though very long and full. I went to the back of the plane and they had some 1/2 bins back there. The stewardesses moved some cracker boxes and stuff out of them so I had a 1/2 bin all to myself with only my dress in it. I did check all other luggage besides my laptop bag so they were nice about it.

Southwest as far as I know does not have hanging space. Try to fly at an odd time (not the business flights) and it might be less crowded. Do the check in 24 hours before and pay the extra $10 to get priority boarding in the A group and you should be fine.

Everyone was really nice and helpful about the whole thing. Good luck I hope you have as wonderful of an experience as I had :-)

Oh and security (at DEN) was wonderful... they deal with it all the time and the only thing is they all tell you thier wedding stories.
  • Also, your seamstress/alterations person should be able hang the dress in a certain way and show you how to carry it so that it has the best chance of not getting wrinkled. When I mentioned to my seamstress that I might be flying, she said to let her know if I was so she could show me how to carry the dress.
  • Is there anyway you could overnight it to where you are going?

  • Oh man I could only imagine what that would cost...it almost seems more risky no?

<div>Did you have to explain it was your wedding dress? did it fit through the scanner without any problem?</div>
