Tablecloths, overlays, runners - basics?

So all of the tables will be round, minus the bridal party table.

Do we use a tablecloth, overlay, and a runner on them? Or just a tablecloth and runner? Or, is just an overlay and a runner sufficient?
Basically, what is the traditional way to do this?

This next question depends on the answers to the above questions, but what colors should we do the above pieces in? (i.e. should the runners be yellow or gray? should the tablecloths be yellow, gray, or even white?) Our colors are yellow and gray.

Re: Tablecloths, overlays, runners - basics?

  • We want our reception to be traditional but fun.

I think I like the idea of the tablecloth and runner better than the tablecloth and overlay.

Would you go gray tablecloths and yellow runners? Or vice versa?

    BTW thanks for the insight!

  • The venue provided ivory table clothes and damask ivory overlays. I truly despised the the overlays, but don't mind the ivory table clothes.  We're just renting gray overlays with the ivory table cloth under.

Personally, I would do the yellow runners with the gray table clothes.  The yellow table clothes are a little too much color for me.

  • I think I would do white tablecloths with gray overlays OR runner. Then, to bring in the yellow, have your centerpieces be yellow.

I think having yellow or gray tablecloths would be a little much, but that's just me.

  • Well, the centerpieces are most likely going to have sunflowers, so that could incorporate the yellow aspect.

So I could do white tableclothes, gray overlay (or runner), and sunflower centerpieces.

OR I could stick with the gray tablecloths, yellow runner, and sunflower centerpieces. But now I'm worried that it will be too much yellow.

We want our reception to be traditional and semi-formal.
  • We did white table cloths with a flocked organza yellow (our colors were black, white & yellow) table runner and I loved how it turned out.  It was just enough of a pop of color without dominating the room.  We kept the room mostly yellow/white to keep it lighter, and added black in the rocks in our centerpieces and in the napkind.  Black linens would have been way too much, I think.

  • I would do a white tablecloth, gray overlay or runner and yellow napkins.

If you did gray tablecloths I wouldn't have any runner or overlay and then just use yellow napkins and then have your centerpiece be the extra umph of color on your table.

I wouldn't do a yellow tablecloth with a yellow centerpiece because that would be a lot of yellow in one room

  • I really like this - either gray tablecloth without anything, or white tablecloth with either a gray runner or gray overlay.

Which is more formal looking, the runner, or the overlay? Which do you guys prefer?

I'd stick w/ this...it sounds cute and not too overbearing.  :)

  • As to formality it really comes down to the fabric used.  A cotton overlay would be less formal then say a satin runner.  I personally prefer an overlay over a runner because an overlay will provide more bang for your buck with a larger pop of color being shown.  With a runner I feel like they get lost on the table and/or competing with the centerpiece, dishes, glassware, purses, favors, etc.

  • I think I've decided on overlays then. While I like the look of the runner better, I think that overall an overlay will look better and help the room come together.
