Work event vent

I work for a smaller company (there are 10 of us). One of our salesmen is retiring so we are throwing him a party and expecting about 60 people. The party will be at a museum (one that has to do with our field of work). Our elderly owners are insisting that they will take care of food and booze for the party (I have always taken care of all events in the past). The party starts at 5:30 and is located in a major city and has very little parking.
Now for the vent:
1.) They are insisting on only serving seafood. I have tried to explain to them that not everyone likes or can eat seafood. They have to think of their guests and not just want they want to eat. They actually got angry at my boss and I for suggesting that we have something other than seafood.
For the 60 guests they think clam chowder and two platters of lobster rolls is enough?!

2.) They think one case of red wine and one case of white (6 bottles each) is enough for everyone and that they do not need to provide anything else to drink.

I have already asked  my boss (the owners are her parents) if I could just order more food from the caterer or just bring a salad and some platters with roll ups or sandwiches or SOMETHING.  She said her dad would be pissed.

I will definitely bring the drinks but should I bring more food?

  • I think they are crazy if they think that will feed 60 people.  Like you said not everyone can even eat seafood and a lot of people don't like it.  I would say at least maybe chicken tenders or something....but if your boss will get mad then I would go to them ONE more time tell them what you think and if they say no then dont worry about and when it falls apart you can say I told you so.  Also not sure how many drinkers you have but that doesn't really sound like a lot...Hell I can drink a bottle of wine myself! haha  That really sucks but if you tried to tell them...not much else you can do.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Me too!  (bottle of wine)!
Yeah I will try one more time about the food but i will definitely bring the drinks!

My brain isn't working correctly today and for some reason thought you meant you worked for an event planning service.  My first thought was "They want to serve what and keep clients?!"  But now I get it lol.

That sounds like a recipe for disaster, but don't stress yourself or get in trouble for ordering more food.  I would probably approach the daughter one more time in an attempt to help her parents save face but as they say...you can lead the horse to water...!

  • Nah. Just be happy that you know what's up ahead of time and make plans accordingly so you're not hungry or thirsty or whatever when you get there.  Unless you know someone specifically who is allergic to seafood, there's not much else to say.  If anyone asks you specifically about the plans you can tell them what you know and let them decide what they want to do.  But if no one asks you let it go.
  • That is crazy that they don't value the imput of you and your boss.  And how crazy is it that they won't listen to their own daughter?  Seafood is a big allergy among a lot of people I know and I know several people who won't touch the stuff.  Plus there might be some vegetarians in the mix as well.  That's very inconsiderate to not try to accomodate more people.

And I too could finish off a bottle of white wine by myself.  On a good night, I might be able to finish off two!  :-)

I wouldn't step on anyone's toes.  The last thing you need is to be in the doghouse for a doing a good deed.  It's just not worth it.  Let your boss go down for this one.  It sounds like a family matter.  :-(

  • GAC - my workplace dynamic is all types of crazy.  They take the fun out of dysfunctional.  I could probably keep you entertained for days with horror stories from here... (my boss likes to WAY over share about her personal life and I can't scrub the imagine of her husband (who works with us) in his assless chaps) and thats not even nearly the worst!

I asked again (about the food issue) and I got a big fat NO.  Tonight should be very interesting.  I have my flask all ready.
