New Orleans

We are planning to visit New Orleans on our honeymoon.  For those of you who have been (or live there), I would love some suggestions on hotels.  Is it worth it to stay in the French Quarter?  Specific hotels you might recommend?  We are planning of seeing the French Quarter, but would like to take some day trips outside of the immediate city as well, FI really wants to put his toes in Gulf water.  I'd welcome any and all suggestions!

Re: New Orleans

  • We are leaving from NOLA for our cruise.  FI was actually born and raised there. We did a brief trip last October, here are some suggestions for you:

    - Hotel - we are staying at The Cornstalk (cilck to link to their website) hotel after our cruise.  It's right near the FQ and FI has always wanted to stay there.  Very reasonably priced for that area and a beautiful old Victorian charmer.

    - French Quarter - is a lot of fun to wander around here.  The later at night the stranger things get.  LOL.  There are the usual spots that you'll want to see if it is your first visit.  The Quarter has quite a few "massage" parlors and its fair share of men's clubs.  A mixture of nice bars and restaurants with the not so nice.

    - Riverwalk - the riverwalk is just ouside of the Quarter and is fun to walk up and down and see the Mississippi.  Right near by they have converted what was an old open market into a very cool food vendor and craft stalls.

    - Streetcar - The Streetcars run through all sorts of different districts and are a hoot to ride.

    - Food - NOLA has some of the best seafood I've had in a long time!  If you love food then be sure to look for some local restaurants serving fresh seafood.  Off the top of my head I can't think of any specific restaurants but if anything comes to mind I'll add them.

    - Zoo - the NOLA zoo is pretty nice.  Not sure if this your thing.

Not sure if you were planning on renting a car?  If you're staying near the FQ you can use streetcars / taxi's to get around.

My best recommendation is to look at some travel sites (my favorite is Trip Advisor) on the local city board.  You'll get lots of great recommendations for restaurants, hotels and things to do.

Have fun in NOLA - it's a great city.

There are lots of different kinds of hotels in the Quarter , as well as Uptown and the CBD ....Do you want large hotel , something funky B and B.... We have stayed at the OmniOrleans, Provential in the QUARTER and LaPavillion in CBD. ..... There are lots of smaller ones I'd love to try.... Like The Columns in uptown ..... Yes the quarter can be kinda crazy but there are loads of great restaurants and great music there and all over.... ESP on Frenchman Street.....French market is a fun hour or so to see what vendors have....or walk around Royal St and check out antiques.. Also fun are a carriage tour or ghost tour.....try to have a jazz brunch somewhere lots of restaurants have these on weekends ..... Like Commanders Palace....Court of Two Sisters......Really love uptown lots of beautiful old homes and churches and Magazine St. is fun to shop and eat...Tulane is up there if you want to see the campus.... The. trolley system is great .... Love the one that runs down St Charles .... A great trip is to the river plantations like Oak Alley or an airboat adventure.....there not really a beach close by unless you drive over to the GulfPort area/ Buloxi..... Not a real true picture of Gulf beaches. Like Pensacola or ...... The new Orleans board could give you more ideas......
  • i'd second the above ideas (all of them :)  The Cornstalk is super cute and in a pretty quiet area of the quarter, but the Columns is nice too, right on the streetcar route.  THe last time we were there, we stayed in the Garden District at a place we found on Criagslist.  I wouldn't recommend doing that necessarily, but it was a very nice, pedestrian friendly neighborhood.  We were on Freret near S. Carrollton and St. Charles; near Tulane.  Also very close to Audubon Zoo, which as someone mentioned, is amazing.  I used to work in zoos, so I always try to visit them wherever I am, and this one is great.  I also have stayed at a hostel on Felicity and Annunciation (the Bourbon House), and it was an amazingly nice hostel.  Very cheap and free pancakes :)

Go visit a cemetery, drive out to a plantation, or go to a jazz bar on Frenchmen St.  It's a little past the quarter, but just as lively and less crowded.  Just as strange :)  Eat at Cafe du Monde.  Buy some Pralines.  Eat some Gumbo.  Learn aout Voodoo.  Go to Mardi Gras World and eat some yummy king cake.  Visit Avery Island (a bit of a drive) and see where they make Tabasco Sauce.  Take a swamp tour.  The large city park on the north side is also nice to walk around in; that's where the art museum is as well.  Or just for fun and scenery, drive across Lake Ponchartrain.  The bridge is almost at water level.

Those are just a few ideas, there are so many more!!

  • OP, I hope that you see this...I just found your post this morning.

I'm a NOLA native (living in TX now)...

I prefer to stay at the Maison Dupuy, it's on the edge of the FQ and it's run so well! It's a bit pricey, but the staff is marvelous and the rooms are so comfy.

IF you want to see one of the famous cemetaries (all of the tombs are above ground) the I highly, HIGHLY suggest that you go on one of the guided tours. Sadly, criminals prey on the cemetaries at night, and even during the day if they see that you're not with a group. It sucks that I have to say this about my city, but it's true.

Bourbon Street is fun, please stop by Pat O's for a Hurricane (be careful! the rum sneaks up on you and packs a punch!) don't feel like you have to rush through the drink though, because you can get it in a Go Cup...

Commanders Palace is a must for a really, really nice, elegant dinner. So is Brennans.

As for the Gulf, Grand Isle is about a 2 hour drive south...the people on the Isle are very nice.

YOU MUST do Cafe Du Monde for beignets and cafe au lait...don't wear dark colors when you go, powdered sugar and all.

Do a river boat cruise...oh and the Aquarium of the Americas is there...lovely.

There is really so much to do, you should have an awesome honeymoon!
  • BF and I are going in October for a bday trip: a honeymoon will be great there! I'm into boutique hotels, so I am looking at International House Hotel and Hotel Le Marais. If you're into independent properties, I recommend checking those out. Also, if you like food and hands on experiences, I definitely recommend a cooking class! Dinner or brunch at Commanders Palace is such a nice experience, and very quintessential NOLA. Have fun!!
  • These are some great suggestions.  I've pasted them into one document so that I can bring them with me on my trip!  Thanks ladies, you are great!!
