SF/Napa/Portland/Seattle

FI and I are foodies and love to travel to find new restaurants. We thought that this combo would be awesome with all of the great restaurants and wine vinyards that the NW US has. Any suggestions? Personal experiences with this area?

  • What time of year will you be visiting Portland/Seattle? And how much time do you have?

Any preferences for dining recommendations (i.e. Italian/Thai/French etc)?

We are going to be visiting Oregon wine country in a few weeks (Willamette Valley) and just visited the wine region in Walla Walla, Washington which was AMAZING (blog entries on Walla Walla below):

  • Wow, what a great trip!

We just got back from our SF/Napa trip.  Our big Napa restaurant that we were so excited about was a total bust (Iron Chef Morimoto's restaurant) so I obviously don't recommend it.  Our big fancy dinner in SF was at Gary Danko and it was a wonderful experience.  We ate at a lot of nice places, but this was the highlight.

We did the following wineries/tastings:  Castello di Amorosa (this totally touristy castle but it was neat), Ridge (because we have drank it before), Domain Chandon (champagne--my favorite!), Fransciscan (very good), and Sterling--we didn't like the wine so much but you get to take a ski lift thing up to the winery and you get an aerial view of Napa.  Then you tour the winery yourself and get 5 tastings.  So fun!

  • In the Portland area, Newberg has a lot of wineries that are amazing. FI and I went in March and spent the weekend wine tasting. It was beautiful and a lot of fun.
  • We were recently in SF / Napa and had a great time.

I am surprised that PP said they did not enjoy Morimoto, we had a great meal there and Chef was in house the evening we went - Fi was very excited to meet him!

We had hoped to but didn't make it Buchon, a Thomas Keller restaurant with a french flair.... friends of ours went and had a great time, but we just got caught up.  Along the same lines, Thomas Keller also has Ad Hoc, which has a more casual menu and has a fixed menu at different times and was highly recommended by a foodie couple we met.

We toured a couple of the smaller wineries on the recommendations of a different group of friends and really enjoyed them, but most required reservations.  It worked out really well, but either your day was very structured (from pt A to pt B to Pt C) or you were at larger wineries where you didn't get as much personal attention.  I did like Chandon though - it was different!  I'd also recommend Duckhorn if you are in that area.    If you are in St. Helena and looking for a more casual meal, we both love the Rutherford Grille (great jalapeno cornbread app!)

We had done a Seattle trip the year before, and I can't quite remember where we ate while there but we had some amazing meals.  Ill look back and see if I can remember some of the restaurants we tried.
