Looking for a post wedding party place

We're getting married in early October 2012 on a small boat out of Haddam on the CT River. Our original thought for post-wedding (same evening) is to have a casual, laid-back party at our house. However, we'll have 45-50 people as guests, and that's too many people for our house. Not to mention that we'd have the cleaning, decorating and food to take care of ahead of time, and cleaning up afterwards and putting our house back in order. We'd love to find an alternative to our house, but we don't want a typical restaurant, wedding/reception venue, etc. We're both getting married for the second time, and are not into the "typical" wedding traditions. We want someplace that's relaxing, conducive to socializing/mingling, perhaps with a fireplace where we can (probably) supply our own food and drinks to keep the expense down. A big open cabin with a fireplace would be perfect but they don't seem to exist in Connecticut! Any ideas would be SO appreciated!

  • Have you looked into renting some kind of clubhouse like the elks club, lions, etc?? It may not be super nice with a fireplace...but it would be laid back and you would be able to supply your own food/drinks!

  • Have you looked at any VFW halls or something like that? Like PP said, not glamorous but definitely laid back!

  • What about a friend or family's house?  Would anyone offer to hold it at theirs so it won't be more stress on you? Also, you have to think about, will each and every one of those people show up afterwards? You might have that many people going to the wedding, but I doubt they will all come afterwards.  We did something similar and we just had a thing at my parents house and it was a lot of fun.

  • The moose club in bazra (sp?) has a amazing fireplace! It's kind of near the casinos
