Tableware Outdoors

I am getting married on a farm and having the reception right there as well.  The entire event will be outdoors and our menu is very picnic type food (i.e. grilled chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad).  My caterer does not provide tableware (plates, silverware, glassare, etc).  My question is:  is it too tacky to use plastic ware?  We are working with a VERY limited budget, but we are also planning on nearly 300 people.  What do we do??

Your wedding and reception sound almost exactly the same as mine! :D (Everything except the farm. Ours will be creek-side at my parents house.)

We are going with plastic silverware and heavy duty paper plates. (Like Chinet.) I would hate to have to clean up spilled plates on the ground our on guests because of floppy plates.

  • Thanks for you response!

What are you doing for glassware??
  • I'm ordering silverware off of http://www.lionsdeal.com. You can get 12 basic spoons for $0.99. I'm ordering glasses and plates from http://www.dollartree.com. And I'm ordering linen tablecloths and napkins from http://www.linentablecloth.com.

We only have like 80 people coming though.

If you have 300 confirmed guests, then I would suggest using either rental supplies or just hitting up Sam's Club for plastic/paper supplies. That would get expensive buying your own stuff (we actually need plates and silverware so it works out good!) and it would be a pain to clean everything.

Our reception will be outside by the lake at my dad's house. And our budget is $1,000....no joke lmao! So far spent around $200 and bought my dress, made the veil, the BM dresses, BM bouquets, GM gifts, BM gifts, and the centerpieces...gotta say I am awesome :-)
  • I second the lionsdeal, we ordered ours from there. I really want my wedding to have more of a classy feel than a BBQ feel, so we spent 80 bucks and bought all the silverware.
  • They have the really nice looking plastic plates, and the silver plastic utensils. I think that would give it a classy feel, without being too much.

OK, call me crazy.  I'm a 3 time MOB one county to the East of you!

I think what you are proposing is just fine.  think of the logistics of all that rented tableware for such a large group.

That being said (this is the part where you can call me crazy), this week at Meijer they have Vanity Fair disposables buy one get one free.  They are sturdy, a creamy white color with no crazy designs, and they would be really appropriate for what you are doing.  The cake plates are the same deal.

The dinner plates would be just under 12 cents apiece, and a bit cheaper for the cake plates.  Our family gets together several times a year and I always bring the disposables.  I bought quite a bit of the buy one get one.  My DD's tell me I have a paper plate hoarding problem......:)

    Hope that helps!  Good luck

ETA:  If we were planning for the last DD's wedding and were going with disposables, the ones I mentioned are exactly what we would choose.
  • I agree with using diposable.  We are having an outdoor wedding with bbq in Washingotn State and we are using heavy duty black disposable plates.  You can find them at Cash N Carry restaurant supply type stores.

We also found some nicer plastic cups with a diamond cut out design that look like glass.  They are really heavy duty and will work perfctly.  A little more classy than the red keg cups FI wanted.  :)
  • We are having an outdoor wedding and we got heavy duty plasticware from webstaurantstore.com and linen-like napkins 500/$38.99. The napkins are really thick and durable. We also got the glassware from that site. My mom picked up the silver plastic utensils at GFS. You really can't tell they are plastic until you pick them up. Good Luck!
  • I used the plasticware that looked like silver, and heavy plastic plates. They really worked well, and so many people were fooled until they lifted the forks. :) They are a bit more expensive than regular plastic spoons, forks and knives, but I thought they were worth it. Here's a pic.  HTH!
