F/U - That stray puppy I found...

... needs a new name!  (And a new home, but first things first.)  My sister calls him "Thor" and my brother calls him "Rex," but neither name suits him.

What do you think?  I'm leaning towards Arthas, but that's because I'm a major geek.

Anyway, a local rescue agreed to have him neutered and list him for adoption on the condition that I continue to foster him.  It's not an ideal situation for me -- I have four dogs, two cats and one very allergic fiance -- but it's better than almost certain death at the pound.  (A couple of years ago, when I did rescue, the statistic was 60,000 unwanted dogs and cats euthanized each year in the Phoenix metropolitan area.  I can't imagine that's improved with the recession.)

So, Puppy is safe for now and scheduled to go under the knife tomorrow.  But I could really use something cleverer than "Puppy" to put on his paperwork!

  • Magnus.

Also, thank you for fostering.  We wouldn't have one of our cats if someone hadn't stepped up to foster her!

That is awesome of you to foster him, you rock!
  • Wow, he's adorable. He looks like a Scooby to me--something goofy and dejected-looking but extremely cute about him.
  • I like Magnus, too!

And Cairne, but I've read the Cataclysm spoilers so... well, let's just say I'd prefer a name with a happier ending.  (Not that Arthas is particuarly happy, but at least there's a redemption theme there.)

My fiance's suggestion is Fiyero.  I've taught him well.  :D

That describes him perfectly!  He's actually starting to smile, and he has this big, goofy grin...

I'll try for better pictures tomorrow.  :)

True enough, however, there is some discussion that Cairne may still have a role to play in the Emerald Dream (I believe).  I don't remember the details, one of my guildies was geeking out one day.

This is my Scooby and he approves of sharing his name :-)
Or he could be a Scrappy Doo!

  • I think it's great you're fostering him.

We're thinking about getting a dog, and looking at the local rescues.  I think we'd adopt a Beau or Scooby over an Arthas or Cairne.  Because I don't like changing a dog's name once they learn it, and I'd hate to go around for the next 10 years going "His name's Arthas/Cairne, we didn't come up with it and I have no idea what it means, I think it's from fiction somewhere."  So just something to think about if you'd like him adopted quickly.
  • PS.  Right now I'm looking at a dog named Oscar.  He's awesome, but doesn't respond to his name at all.

  • I love the name Oscar. I really do. I say it with an Irish accent, O'Scar.

  • I think he looks like a Maximus. I'm so glad he has a good home for now. I choose to believe its just a stop to another good home.

  • I have always wanted to be a foster dog mom.  One day hopefully.....

    I like Beau too.
  • He's a cutie! I vote Dexter!

  • I have a friend who dreams of owning a doberman and a min pin so she can name them Maximus and Minimus. :D

That's a good point, Pirategal -- thanks!  Most of my pets are rescues, and I didn't think twice about changing their names when I adopted them.  But I realize some people would be reluctant to (and for very valid reasons!), so a more common name might be better than something I came up with while geeking out.

I'm leaning towards Beau and Dexter.  I think I'll ask Puppy if he has a preference.  :)

  • Yay for you fostering him! I asked all my coworkers and family but no one is able to take in a new dog right now :(

Thanks so much for asking around!

  • Of course! It was breaking my heart to think he would have to go to the shelter.
I'm going to have T's mom ask her coworkers as well.
  • Chance - you've given him a second one.

I know, I know. Corny. Max and his brother were named Lucky and Chance in the shelter. We were told they were found, but Chance's paperwork online (the deaf brother) said he was an owner surrender.
