Invite calculation

I was wondering how you guys calculated the postage requirements for your invitations.  I was thinking I could just put together one and take it in for weighing.

Re: Invite calculation

  • That's exactly what I would do (and did, even though we were 99% sure ours were going to be standard postage.)  This is not a time for guessing :)

  • That's exactly what you should do. Get one completely together inside the envelope and then have the post office weigh it for you.
  • Ooo TR I like your new avatar! :)
  • Thanks, AK :)  That's from my friend's wedding that I was a bridesmaid for in Cape May last weekend.

  • Just a note: the cost of postage is increasing again soon. If you do choose to go for wedding ring stamps instead of forever stamps, make sure they'll be enough to cover you if your invites go out after the postage price increase.
  • Good call, opal! I forgot that postage costs were going up again. This article (clicky) says it will take effect at the beginning of 2011. But Meg- definitely ask about that when you're at the post office. Or maybe look at their options for Forever stamps. I don't know if they have different designs for those or not.
  • Yeah, I was just checking out the designs.  The wedding ring design is really cute.  I'm sending out the invites next week, so I might be okay with the actual invites and then use forever stamps for the return card and envelope.

  • yep!  i assembled a complete invite and took it in.  to be safe, take it to 2 post offices and have them tell you teh same number.  ive heard stories on here where gals got a rate from one place, prepared everything, then needed more postage.
  • Why are you sending out invites 4 months before the wedding? That's super early.
  • We used the higher postage heart wedding stamp in '09 (which wasn't that cute), and then we just used forever for the RSVPs and TY cards.

  • Oh, the early invites...well, my mother is really behind that.  I will have almost 99% from out of town.  She urged me to do it early.  I could probably put it off longer than that, though, really.  It would cut down on the stress (not that wedding planning is really that stressful, just medical issues) and I could go to two different places and take my time.  I'm just an early bird I guess.  :)

  • Your postage is determine by both weight and size/shape.  We had square invites, which are automatically $.61, and then they were also overweight since they were pocket invites, so ours were $1.05 for each invite, plus the $.44 for the RSVP cards.  Definitely do what you said and take it in to weigh it.

The stamps we used were a $.61 wedding cake stamp, and the $.44 wedding bands stamp.  We used one of each for the invite, and then just the rings on the RSVP card.

About the increase, they aren't supposed to go up until January I believe, definitely 2011 though.  While you may be sending them out soon, that means your wedding isn't until January, so there's a chance soem RSVP cards won't come back until the increase.  Maybe you should put the Forever stamps on those.

And definitely don't send them out this soon.  Tell your mom she is crazy (sorry) for wanting them out so early.  First of all some people will be offended thinking you are doing a B-list since you are sending them out that early.  Also, there is a good chance several people will wait to respond until its closer, and then will forget to, or lose their cards.  And some people will respond early and then change their plans or literally forget about the wedding.  So sending them out this early will really only cause more problems for you, and could affect your head count.

Yeah, I agree with all of this. It's really just going to be a headache, and you risk annoying or offending people. Just wait a couple of months.
