Printing DIY Invites

I am contemplating DIY invites by either buying one of the kits from Michaels or a kit from one of the online wedding invitation websites.  Has anyone printed DIY invites with paper pre-cut to a non 8 1/2" x 11" size?  What kind of printer/ink did you use?  Did you have any problems?

What about taking the paper and your file/design to Staples or Kinkos to print for you?  Has anyone done this?

I'm worried it will be a challenge to get the invites to print properly or that the ink will smudge if the printer or ink isn't right for the type of paper.

Any input/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

I didn't print invitations, but we printed all of our programs, menus, and place cards. We bought a Canon printer from Best Buy for about $90. Got all the paper from Paper Source. Didn't have any problems with smudging ink. We just asked the guy working in that department in Best Buy what he recommended for what we were trying to do. Very pleased with the results!

We did get a kit from Michaels and were very happy with the results!  We just bought some extra card stock to use as inserts (accommodations and directions). We actually got tons of compliments on how nice they were!

We ended up printing them at work-we went in on a weekend and used a regular laser printer-we had a little bit of trouble getting them to print initially (we had to play around with the settings) but once we did them they were good to go!

Many printers nowadays have an adjustable tray so that you can print envelopes, etc.  So as long as you have that everything should be fine.

You also may want to look in the settings and see if there is a 'paper thickness' setting.  That's more likely to give you trouble than the paper size.

I printed my placecards myself, and did them one at a time just to make sure the paper didn't stick together, etc.

Luckily my future BIL is a graphic designer, he designed the invitation for us..HOWEVER I would suggest going to Paper Source and buying the paper.  The nwe store in Bethesda is THE BEST!  WE took our invites to the Kinkos next door and had them printed and cut to size for $30.  With paper and printing we spent less than $150!
