When are you....

...going for your first dress fitting?  I know it is early but I'm trying to get a timeframe down.  Also, what are you having done so I know if it's more time-intensive that you are allowing for or something simple.  I know I need my dress hemmed and bustled.  Haven't tried in on in a while so hoping that is still it!

Re: When are you....

  • When I tried my dress on (just for fun because the store had gotten it in from the designer) I was told that your first dress fitting should be 6 weeks prior to when you need to wear it for the first time. So if you plan on doing bridal portraits then 6 weeks before that you need to have your first fitting. If you are not doing bridal portraits then 6 weeks prior to your wedding.

  • Oh and it didnt matter what I needed to be done 6 weeks would be sufficient. Hope that helps some.

  • my dress still isn't in yet, it's supposed to be here in april-may. I'm getting a little nervous though because i was supposed to be getting a swatch from them 3 weeks after i ordered it, and it's been three months. i called a couple weeks ago and they said they still hadn't received it. (the designer was sending it to the store, and then they'd send it to me). but swatch or not, hopefully the dress comes on time.

i'm planning on getting it altered elsewhere so whenever it comes in, I'll start talking to the seamstress and see what she thinks. i will only have 3ish months at that point, so i'll probably have to start soon.
    Happily married since 9/1/2012!

  • I was also told that my first dress fitting should be 6 weeks before, so that puts me at July. I know I'll have to have my dress hemmed and I also want to get cups sown in.

  • I think my first one is supposed to be in March, but that's just a muslin fitting so I won't be trying my actual dress on yet. I can't believe it's been SO LONG since I bought it back in September! I feel like I hardly know what it really looks like anymore, and I'm a little nervous! Also I've been eating pretty unhealthily since I've been working so much, and I'm worried I won't like how I look in it anymore :-/ Anyone else nervous about fittings?

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • I haven't bought mine yet. Picked out but not purchased.
  • My first fitting will be mid July. I'll go for another 2 weeks later. I do plan on having bridal portraits taken at some point, and will just get any additional alterations done as necessary.
  • Mine will be in July. I'm just getting a bustle added!
I am nervous about it because I've gained weight since I tried it on last. I know it will fit (corset back) I just hope I'm happy with the way I look still.

<div>Me! I was actually just thinking that yesterday. =( I've gained some weight so now I'm all worried. FI and I have been slacking on working out since we've been out of town and hae been working so much more. Ugh</div><div>
</div><div>But, OP, I guess I'll do alterations in July. Maybe near the end of July...? I don't want to do it too far out, but I don't want it too close either. </div>
  • Ditto all the PP -- the dress store I went to said mid July would be the best time to schedule my first fitting. Im getting married at the end of September. And Im super nervous! I actually had to look at a picture last night because I couldnt really remember what  the back of my dress looked like, lol.

  • I have my two fittings scheduled.  They will be on September 1st and September 2nd.  My bridal portraits are September 4th.  What I am having done depends on if I lose more weight or not.  Currently the dress needs to be hemmed and the bust needs to be adjusted.  It also came with pockets when i ordered it without them so that needs to be done, but I don't expect to pay for that because that was a screw up on the part of the dress store.

How much are you guys expecting to pay?

  • The dress shop that I went through, told me to come back in the beginning of June.   I'm glad that I have to go back before than and try on my dress again for my jewelry and hair piece! That sounds like a good excuse to try it on again before June!
  • MIine isn't in yet! They said it would be in sometime around May/June. I know I need it hemmed and a french bustle. I'm really hoping (crosses fingers) to have to get it taken in a little. I measured for the smaller size (which was the same as the sample I tried on) almost perfectly but we all thought the gap in the back looked too wide (its a lace up) so I ordered it in the size up. Who knows at this point? They tell me most dresses (mine included) can be safety taken in up to 2 sizes.

  • I met with the seamstress before I bought my dress to find out how much alterations would be and if they would be able to make the changes I wanted to make.  Currently my dress is a zipper back and I wanted her to change it to a corset.  It will also need to be cleaned because it's a sample, taken in at the bust, hemmed and bustled.  Because of the corset back she wanted me to start in July so that's about 2 months before the wedding.  I haven't called to make the appointment yet, I figured it was still a little early although after reading some of the other posts I'm re-thinking that stance.

Yay glad you'll have your swatch!<div>
</div><div>Thanks ladies.  I think I'll reach out to the seamstress I'm using soon.  I live in a big area but on the local boards I was told that she's the go-to so I don't want her to be too busy to finish.  </div>
  • I ordered my dress Jan. 6 and it won't be in until May 14.  I've scheduled my first fitting for July 6.  That's the first appointment I could get because the lady here is VERY good and VERY popular.  I'm sure it will need to be hemmed, the bust will need to be taken in and it will need to be bustled.  My next fitting will be in a week and if another is needed a week later.
