Getting in Shape

Making changes.

Hi, everyone. This is my first time posting here, I usually stick to the Chit Chat board. Anyway, my husband and I have watched quite a collection of documentaries on Netflix about where our food comes from and the negative impact of fast food and other junk food. The one that we watched that really opened our eyes and inspired us to make changes is called Fork Over Knives. There's a lot of good information about research done about the direct impact of the bad foods that we eat that can result in type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart problems. We already knew that high frutcose corn syrup was bad for us, but we were too passive about it. We ate what was convienent and cheaper and we didn't stop to think about how we were harming our bodies. So, we decided that it was time to change our eating habits. We have commited to no more soda, no fast food and we are carefully reading labels to avoid HFCS, as well as byproducts of HFCS and no processed foods.

The first day of not drinking soda was a little rough since I was so used to the caffiene pick me up in the middle of my work day, but I got through it. We are easily drinking 3 liters (about 1 gallon) of water a day a piece, sometimes more.

My favorite discoveries thus far are orgranic apples (yummmmy, they taste so much better) and veggie burgers! For dinner tonight we are going to have some chili with some meatless ground. I'm really curious about how that will turn out :).

  • I feel like a broken record, because I just suggested this in the thread above you...but how about tea for your midafternoon pick me up?  Caffeinated black tea has about as much caffeine as a can of soda, and there are lots of fun flavors to choose from.  I know it's not for everyone, though.

  • I love coffee & tea..much better for you than soda.

I've done chili with Boca before and it turned out really well! I'm not sure what the HFCs are (and don't care to) but another great subsitute we've done is ground turkey. I actually think I like it better than the beef now.

I love tea :). We actually have a Keurig. Right now I don't have any K-cups that are tea though, lol. So, I will have to get some for sure. As far as coffee goes, I really like hazlenut coffee. And, we don't have any of those K-cups left either :(.

I'm down 5lbs since we started this. I know it's all water weight, but I am very pleased!

We are going to avoid beef and pork. So, ground up turkey would be no problem for us :).

  • Can I ask why you're avoiding beef and pork?  Lean cuts of beef and pork aren't much worse than chicken breast.  In fact, an extra lean ground sirloin will actually give you some better protein, iron, and some vitamins than ground turkey, at negligibly more calories.  And remember that fat isn't bad--you need some fat, and not getting enough is counterproductive to losing weight.

Beef and pork are more expensive though, especially if you're going organic/free range/grass fed, etc.  You might want to check local butcher shops though, if you are at all interested in occasionally eating it--they usually have good deals.

  • For right now, we aren't going to be eating red meat. DH's uncle was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and the doctor told him that he was consuming way too much red meat. It scares us and I told DH no more steaks for awhile. If you get the time and you have a way of watching it, I suggest Forks Over Knives. Aside from the animal cruelty, the places that our cows and pigs and even chickens come from is absolutely gross. Also, they are all corn fed and we are avoiding corn as much as possible because corn that gets fed to cattle and pigs starts out as genetically modified corn loaded up with pesticides (watch the documentary called King Corn). I should have reworded that. We are avoiding grain fed beef and pork. If it's grass fed, I have no problem with eating it. We just haven't come across any lables here that say anything but grain fed, but we haven't looked everywhere yet :). Also, I have no problem paying more for healthy food at all, because in the long run it will pay off when I'm elderly and I don't have any health problems related to the food I was eating.

  • Got it.

Yeah, if you're still interested in eating SOME beef and pork as long as it's grass fed, I would definitely call around to butcher shops in your area.  Or check out farmer's markets, etc.
