GF people - you must try these brownies

http://allrecipes.com/recipe/black-bean-brownies/detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=black%20bean%20brownies&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Home%20Page

I skipped the instant coffee and added 1/4 tsp baking powder (as recommended in the reviews).  They're very good, and you would never know they're made from beans.

Black Bean Brownies
Ingredients:
1 (15.5 ounce) can black beans, rinsed
and drained
3 eggs
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 pinch salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon instant coffee (optional)
1/2 cup milk chocolate chips (optional)
Directions:
1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease an 8x8 square baking dish.
2.Combine the black beans, eggs, oil, cocoa powder, salt, vanilla extract, sugar, and instant coffee in a blender; blend until smooth; pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top of the mixture.
3.Bake in the preheated oven until the top is dry and the edges start to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 30 minutes.

Re: GF people - you must try these brownies

  • Me thinks you are trying to pawn off moderately healthy brownies on me.

i shall try them anyway but smother them in an icing of chocolate ganache.  That'll show you.
  • Ha.  I made them as a challenge to myself - I didn't believe they would be any good.

A nice dollop of vanilla bean ice cream would do nicely as well, along with some hot fudge.

  • Speaking of GF, I had a really good GF snack bar in my Birchbox this month. it's called Larabar Uber--might be old news to you guys, but it was yummy.

  • i totally dig larabar.  So good!
  • Am I the only one wondering if the brownies were prompted by the earlier pot discussion?

I admire your courage, I don't think I could ever try to put beans in my chocolate. I just cannot reconcile that in my head!

<div>I'll bet they do.  Something about your brownie's name leads me to believe I'd be in pain and wishing I could tear out my stomach with a knife post-eating.</div><div>

ohhh....my apologies, I missed the GF aka gluten free....
    so sorry
I just saw "brownies" and went into a coma dreaming about them
  • Ha, that's okay.  At first I thought, "Well, that's kind of mean" but then I realized you probably missed the GF part.
  • Sorry, I had a friend make me try some GF brownies made with black beans before and they were DISGUSTING. Perhaps (and hopefully) this is a different recipe, but I don't think I could try that again. They had that grainy texture cold beans have, and you could definitely taste the black beans. Maybe she didn't blend them enough or had fewer ingredients though.
  • I was very leery of the recipe, Nicole, but they really are tasty.  The batter is very thin in the blender, then I sprinkled the chocolate chips on top before baking.  They're definitely cake-y rather than a gooey chewy brownie.

  • It must be a different recipe, then. Maybe I'll give it a try after all!
  • I'm late to the party but a CW of mine (when I was doing the whole GF thing) made me a chocolate cake made out of chick peas.  Seriously the best thing ever.
