Is it cheaper to go to an independent seamstress to alter my dress?

I am debating on using my bridal salon where I purchased my dress to have my alterations done. Is it worth it? Or can I get a better deal by going to an independent seamstress? Does anyone have any experience with a good seamstress in the western burbs? I'm afraid to take my dress to just anyone...TIA!

Re: Is it cheaper to go to an independent seamstress to alter my dress?

  • I looked into the seamstress around here that everyone recommends but it was so annoying trying to get her to give me a price estimate that I just said screw it.  I didn't want to take my dress out of the salon to get a quote that I might not even use.

I really think it depends on what you're getting done though, and the reputation of your salon.  I am getting a lot of things done, and my salon has a flat fee of $375 and I know they do good work.  So I just gave up looking elsewhere because it was easier.  However, if you are getting minimal work done and your salon charges an outrageous flat fee for alterations, I would certainly look around.

  • I found out that each HOB is independently owned, so pricing of their dresses and alterations vary with each store.

  • Thanks for the advice, ladies! I purchased my gown from Crystal Bride in Geneva so I completely trust them. We'll see.
  • It depends on what you need done.  The salon I bought my dress for had a $350 flat alterations fee. I didn't 'think mine would be that high, since my dress is pretty simple -- no boning or huge train. I went to an outside seamtstress (Mary Catomy in Shiller Park), and it's looking like it will be $200.

I also made the decision because the salon I bought my dress was further away, and I didn't want to make the trek back and forth for alterations.

    Good luck!
