Craigslist.  I think you said your FI has a truck anyway, so he can pick it up with that and just have him bring a buddy or two to pick up/carry.  You can get some amazing deals.

    Agreed on Ikea.
I'm a bit of a furniture snob so anything I suggest outside of ikea (or CL, that's a good call Calindi) is going to run you a looooot..... :/

... they took the truck?  As in repossessed?  Eegads.

I rarely if ever buy hard furniture (meaning not sofas, pillows, beds, etc.) from a furniture store because they mark everything up so drastically.  It does make it easier for things to match, but I find it more fun to mix-and-match, and buying dressers and tables and stuff off Craistlist lets you buy better quality (though it might take more shopping) at a lower price.  Just wipe it down and sometimes needs a bit of refinishing, but a definitely value!

Other idea is consignment stores.  I got a coffee table that is awesome - super solid, gorgeous - for $80.  My Mom showed up and looked at it, looked at the label underneath and told me it was originally a $1300 table!!!  We looked it up online and sure enough she was right.  Not a scratch or anything on it, though now 4 years later it's in need of refinishing.  I'm waiting until we move to refinish a bunch of stuff.

IKEA.  They have some dressers that are pretty cheap, but you have to put it together yourself so if you or your FI aren't very good at following directions, or don't own a set of tools, it'd be pointless.

I bought 2 of these 3 drawer dressers from IKEA for $43.99 each.  I thought it was really easy to put them together but alot of people complain about IKEA's directions being hard to understand.  It took me probably 45 minutes to put the first one together and then maybe 20 for the other one.  I got these because they're unfinished and I wanted to be able to paint and finish them the way I wanted.  IKEA does have finished 6 drawer dressers starting at $149.99.

Other than that Craigslist, or thrift stores.  If you go the thrift store route, make sure you know what you're doing.  Don't pay $100 for a particle board dresser.  I won't even look at particle board anything because it's cheap and doesn't last, but if I had to I wouldn't pay more than like $20 for it.  Look for real wood if possible.  Even if it's in bad shape, that's what sand paper is for.. and don't under estimate the power of a coat of paint.

Ikiea Fred Meyer and Target have highboys and some larger things sometimes, but not always. CL like others said. I'm with FTL though I have made a lot of our furniture and or we have bought nicer stuff because it was meant to last forever or a long time at least. example we have a camp out in our den for like 9 months (we weren't there all the time with the moving so it was maybe 4-5 months real time until we could get a 20% discount plus like 15-20% more from the Restoration Hardware at U village in WA hehe to get the sofa we never intended to fall in love with - oops :) I don't know where our bedroom set came from that was FI's doing our dresser is big enough to hold both of us and we also have a highboy that we can split.I have seen similar sets a stores though. the guest room was all inherited family stuff so that's no help.

The only other thing I can think of is antique stores which we have gotten some nice piece from - mud room bench solid oak, three drawers - 100 bucks. and an oak trunk that we use as a coffee table that was like 75 bucks - I hide everything in that thing - where else would rockband and guitar hero live? I will warn you that I did notice it was harder to find stuff right away on the west coast, but they did tend to have better deals some of the time because people didn't realise what they had. Eugene I know have a few really good stores, but I haven't relaly looked in the Portland area - just on the coast, but i'm sure if you were intested you coudl find something. It isn't really a rush job though it can take a day or a few months depending on dedication and luck, but I used to go hunting on my off days when FI was deployed.
Unfinished local furniture stores are also a good go msot times. You can finish it and paint it how you want and sometimes get some good deals if your not getting a whole set  or you get last years products or their base stock that they always have and is easy for them to produce. That way it can last longer if you want and i'm a snob because i grew up doing a lot of carpentry I have particle board and the like. wood all the way, but i also think its sacrilegious to paint well grained wood so its all a personal opinion.

awwwI love Uvill... I used to work at the Starbucks there back in 07-08 when I was going to UW. :)
Oh man restoration hardware.. I have to stay away from. That place is dangerous.
Ryan is a super snob when it comes to furniture which has made me such (Like the story I told you guys a month or two ago about our thousand dollar desk... jeezes husband... tighten the purse strings!!) So I like to decorate things in a more funky way to make it more unique and ours. I like the good quality with the funky cheap decor pieces that won't hurt if I get bored of them and want to switch them out. :P

Yeah, I'm with IKEA, Craigslist, or garage sales. I don't see a ton of sales here, but back in Utah there were at least 6 we would pass every Saturday. One of my Mom's co-workers goes to them every weekend and gets some great stuff. Also, in addition to the Salvation Army (I found a kick-a dresser at one once)/Goodwill/St. VIncent dePaul (and I'm really wary of buying "soft" things at those, "hard" things are much easier to clean), if there's a base near you, you might try an armed services specific thrift or re-sale shop. I know there was one on base in Montgomery (where FI was for ASBC). And there's one here that specializes in stuff people have sold to PCS. OR a Habitat For Humanity resale shop; it's pretty much the stuff they got that they didn't end up using.

FTL - i'm the snob haha but i'm converting him. He would buy stuff every 4-7 years if it was him. I on the other hand like to get big pieces and keep them I dodn't like to change them out often. He was dead set against leather sofa and I woudl be darned if i was getting a recliner - it wasn't happening. We looked for like 1 week straight when he got back from a deployment once and picked out a kitchen table and matress and we were suposed to get a sofa. a month later we couldn't find anythign we liked. We were at UVill b/c I was up there for work so he came to pick me up and have dinner and we stayed the night in seattle for whatever well we went in and i fell in love. Didnt say that right away because its like buying a flipping car sometimes. he saw it and was like your going to kill me I know i said I would never get a tleather sofa but i didn't know anyone made leather sofas like this. he layed down on it in the store and was like when can I move in. So i think it was like 5 months later we went back and ordered it to be charged and delivered during the Uvill market sale thing and it was jointly during a RH sale and it was delivered during another deployment. The darn thing is the size of a twin size bed - barely fit in our den, but is hands down the best anything we have ever gotten and was so worth the wait. That place is my drug. When the one in Seattle proper closed they had the best deals ever - ike 75 percent off everythign in the store. I got so much stuff for nothing. Full set of sheets & duvet cover, bathroom accessories, and accent pillow covers for under 100$ - I was so happy!!

    haha prettyirish that's so funny.
We actually have an RH outlet here near me (closer to beach). It's a little north of Everett. Dangerous, dangerous place..
Yeah I have always LIKED the spendy stuff, but I am frugal with my money and I knew not to buy furniture while in college.. H sees everything as an investment, which is why he is willing to blow the cash. Now that H and I own our house (well.. now meaning two years ago) we CAN acquire those spendy things.
H already had great bedroom furniture that he bought I think while in pcola.
I had great bedroom furniture for living on my own (which is now the guest room), so we just need to finish up the office and get a NICE dining room table. Then we'll be set.
But we're super picky since we're willing to spend the money. It took us a year to pick the perfect desk that we LOOOOVE (it's in three parts [desk, corner table, file cabinet] so we can rearrange it however we want for any living space. awesome! Right now it's in an L shape because we have the space.
It's going to take just as long to find a kitchen table because we know EXACTLY what we want, and we're just waiting for some place to make that haha... Getting close. :P

I suggest craigslist, thrift stores or garage sales... unless you want to be spendy and buy something brand new.  I'm cheap, so I'll hit up cheaper routes before buying anything new (other then beds and clothes lol)  but I really do like Ikea and target.  Walmart might even have something.  Just go look around.  You never know what you will find...

Not to side with Kendall or anything, but this kind of almost happened to me... I went on a Sunday, we were given a deal, then about a week later, the back didn't approve it. But what ended up happening was they went through another back that would, which increased my payments by $20 more a month. They weren't gonna just TAKE the car, obviously, but yeah.... this does KIND OF happen.

They wanted to go through another bank and increase our payements $50 a month which was going to be too much for us. So FI looked at other cars and picked out the car we have now. In the long run it will be a much better car for us
