Do any of you wear veils to mass?

Hey ladies,

I'm not trying to begin any kind of theological debate.  I'm just wondering because I want to buy a mantilla veil for mass, and I was wondering if anyone had a particular website/store they like?

Also... I'm not sure what color I want.  I'm trying to be practical.  Most of the women who I see veil wear black... but I don't wear a lot of black clothing to mass ever.  I guess I would feel weird wearing black.  I thought about buying ivory... but wouldn't that look too bridal?  I've seen colored ones (blue, red, etc.), but then I thought a colorful one wouldn't be too practical either.

I'm probably just being really silly.

Just curious to see what anyone else has ever bought.

  • There's a blog I read sometimes. She makes them in her etsy shop and seems to have good reviews. Her blog is awomansplaceis.blogspot.com I don't have any personal experience, but this woman supports her whole family on these etsy shops while her husband finishes school.

  • I have a white mantilla but also a black thing like this: http://www.headcoverings-by-devorah.com/headcoverings-mitpachat-snoods.htm

This is a Jewish site but I think it may be where I got mine.

I also sometimes wear hats...I really like a pretty hat but there's not many places to wear them ime aside from church

I tend to consider black as going with everything so I wouldn't worry that you don't wear black a lot

  • i wore one regularly at hte latin mass, i dont wear one at the novus ordo.

    i ordered mine from www.modestyveils.com

they are all handmade and reputable, and they have a wide selection.
  • For some reason I thought that white mantillas were for unmarried women and girls and then the darker mantillas were for married women.... not sure where I got that from!

I also tend to wear hats and long scarves like this:

  • ^^^ I've thought that too about the white/black thing, but I think it totally doesn't apply b/c so few people would follow it!
And I also love that picture - I've seen it on the internet before, and if I were to regularly veil, I think I would want to wear something more like that. (I had a mantilla that I wore occasionally to Latin Masses, and I lost about 2 years ago, and haven't bothered to replace.)

  • At TOB institute, there were a couple girls that wore white during mass, black during the penance service, and just regular solid "bandana" scarves during class time (which is in the room with a tabernacle)
  • i never cared much for the mantillas, but always went for the triangle veils.  mantillas always reminded me of doily's.
  • Thanks for all the replies!

I will definitely check out all the links.

I usually wear either a scarf that i tie in a handkerchief style or just a very wide headband.  I just wanted to finally try wearing a mantilla veil.  Although I also really like the head scarves like the picture above.

  • I think that white=unmarried and black=married was how it used to be but you definitely don't have to do that anymore.  I got my veil at a catholic bookstore we have here in town, it's very simple but I really like it.  Also, I have a black one, but I have really dark hair so a white veil REALLY sticks out with my hair color :o)

  • Oh yes, every time. :)

You can wear pretty much any kind of veil you want, in any color. Most often women stick to the white = unmarried and black = married trope, and you can also coordinate your veil with the liturgical colors of the season.

You can also wear, as others have said, hats, scarves, or whatever else you would like to use as a head covering.

Is my favorite place, and I've made my fair share. (I've worn a veil for 15 years) She has good quality, and if you get the comb sewn in it doesn't slip around.

    Great lady to work with.

    Blessings,
    Michelle.
