Changing your name

Hi ladies! I have some questions for those of you who have gone through the name changing process already.

- Do you get your new SS card the same day you take in your paperwork or does it get mailed to you?

- Do you need your new SS card when going to the RMV?

- What paperwork/forms do you need when updating car registration? (hoping to get new license and registration all in one shot so I can avoid going to the RMV more than once!)

- any other tips?

They mail you your new SS card.  I got mine in about a week.

As far as needing it for the RMV- it seems be mixed experiances.  Some people have been able to change it without the new card.  I believe when you go to the SS office and change your name it updates the system right away, so I think it's all about luck at the registry.  I didn't want to chance it, so I just waited for my new card.

When I went to the registry for my license they updated my registration at the same time, for no extra cost.

I went to the SS and the RMV the same day.  I had no problems at the RMV without having the SS card (didn't even cross my mind that I needed it).   In fact, I was shocked that the RMV didn't even ask to see my marriage license (but I would not recommend going without it).  As PP mentions, the SS will send you a new card in about a week.

I had looked online at what was needed to change my name at each place, so I'm assuming that the RMV does not require the SS card or I would not have gone same day.

I actually didn't change my car registration - now you're making me wonder if I should have....

I would recommend researching online before you go anywhere - I needed things like my parents SSNs and things like that, which I would not just know off the top of my head.  I went to the SS with a completed name change form in hand.

I went to the SS office first with my marriage license and old SS card, my new card was mailed to me within a week. I wasn't sure about the DMV so I waited for the SS card to come and brought it, along with my marriage license, to get my new license and registration. I don't remember if I needed everything or if they checked everything (def. the marriage license), but I wanted to be prepared.

There are definitely mixed experiences about the RMV.  I think it honestly depends who you get that day.

I went to SS and got a piece of paper with my new name change just saying I had been there.  I brought that to the RMV and they didn't really even double check and went ahead and changed my name for the license.

But I did have a friend go and do this on the same day and the RMV gave her a hard time.  Luckily she stood her ground and basically told the people after the long wait there was no way in hell she would be coming back and they did the name change for her.

Another tip I can offer is try not to go at the end of the month or on a Monday as it can be a LOT more crowded I've come to find and from my other friends who have gotten married.

    Good luck!
