Snarky Brides

Oh please no :(

So I took my laptop to work last week because it got a virus on it.  The last time it did, I brought it to our IT guy and he fixed it for me - it was awesome since I didn't have to pay anything for him to fix it.  Sooo nice.  Anyway he gave it back to me today and I'm playing around on it tonight and I'm noticing that all my pictures are gone.

I was kinda miffed at first but then I realize - it's not that big of a deal since most of them are online or on my SC cards.  But then I looked for my iTunes... and... yeah.

All gone.

Not really sure what to do now, I guess.  Start over?

Ugh :(

  • That happened to me once and I was able to retrieve everything back from my ipod. I'll try and find the link that gave me the specific instructions.

  • Oh, yuck. That's so crappy.

With iTunes, though, can't you re-download stuff you've already purchased without having to pay again? I could be wrong, but for some reason I thought that's how it worked.

  • Oh good call.  I don't have EVERY song on my iPod that I had on my iTunes, but most of it is there.

    I don't feel so bad anymore :)

  • Whatever you do don't sync your Ipod. Go into Itunes and turn off auto sync or you'll erase everything.

  • That happened to me and FI got all the stuff off my iPod back onto iTunes, I have no idea how he did it and he's working right now.  But it is possible.

  • Turn off auto sync - okay - and then what?

I've never done this before so I'm really nervous now :(

  • Thank you so much :)

that only works if every single song on your library was downloaded through iTunes. some of my music is ripped from CDs I don't have anymore, some is downloaded legally from artists' websites who put mp3s on their websites for that specific purpose, some music is emailed to me by friends, and a vast majority of *my* music is illegal. but even through several legal routes, you can lose a LOT of music.

ladies, I keep my music on a separate hard drive from everything else in my computer. that way, when my computer needs to be reformatted or something, I can isolate my music and pictures so they don't get erased. if my computer has to go to someone else (DH is a computer nerd though, so this is extremely rare), I just take the hard drive out. that way, my music is on 2 sources: the hard drive, and my ipod. I highly recommend this method of storage.

  • You're welcome. I hope it works for you. I know you said not everything was on your IPod but at least you'll get a good chunk of it back.

Ugh.  I could just kick myself because honestly, you have NO IDEA how many times I've told myself I need to get an external hard drive for this VERY REASON!  I mean come on, I know better.  Then I wouldn't be having this problem in the first place... lame.

    :(

  • Yeah, I'm with Pooh on this one. We have a home server that houses a backup of all of our media - music, movies, photos, etc.

I learned the hard way when my last laptop died, so this has been a godsend!
  • yea, I got it after I lost an assload of music my sophomore year of college. I actually feel fortunate that it happened to me sooner rather than later, before I built up a 30GB library.

  • I have no advice, but I want to ditto Pooh.  We have all our music, videos and pictures backed up on an external harddrive as well as sharing all the music periodically with a friend of ours, who also has a few external drives.  So if our computer crashes, and the external drive fails, we get everything from him.  There's usually some music missing, but it's not much.  Whole lot better than losing hundreds of gigs of music.
  • I used the software Idump to get everything back off my Ipod. It's free through download.com. I've used it several times. Depending on the size of your ipod it may take a while but it's worth it!

And I'm with the other girls, getting an external hard drive or something of the sort is definitely the way to go!

    Good luck!

Just make sure that the external is backup, not your sole copies of stuff.  'Cause sometimes external HDs take a fall to the floor and you get told the week before your wedding that it will cost $1400 to get 4 years worth of pictures and 12 gigs of music back.
