Rehearsal Dinner Reccomendations?

Hi Austin!

We're planning our wedding in Austin while living in Chicago.  Any recommendations for a good restaurant to hold a rehearsal dinner?  Something casual- my mom is shooting for $25-$30 a person.

Downtown would be ideal since that is where most of our guests are staying.

We have been looking at BBQ, Mexican, and Tapas, but are open to other things.

Thank you so much!

Zilker Clubhouse is a great venue that overlooks downtown.  The best part is that you can cater in what ever food you want.  I am having my rehearsal dinner there and then Rudy's BBQ is catering it for around $10 pp.

i second moonshine (american comfort food).  lamberts is good for bbq (on the upscale, but still casual side).  malaga is the only place i can think of for tapas.  for mexican, there's la condesa (delicious, but rather $$$), maria maria (carlos santana's chain restaurant), ztejas (love it!), iron cactus, el sol y la luna and more..  we have a lot of out of town guests as well and decided to rent a boat on lake travis and cater bbq for the rehearsal dinner - this way the out of towners can enjoy the views of downtown, see the bats, etc.  now let's just cross fingers that the weather cooperates =)

Thanks gals!   I've been to Moonshine for brunch- I remember it being good and will let my mom know to check it out.

I had looked at La Condesa too- it does look tasty!  For the record,in case anyone else is interested, Malaga doesn't have a private room- or at least not one big enough for us.

    Thank you all!

Not sure if you have made a decision, but we are having our rehearsal dinner at Serrano's downtown -- on Red River. It is casual Tex-Mex, and the atmosphere is great there!

We're trying to plan our RD downtown too, and I've found it really depends on your numbers.  We have a bigger headcount (close to 100) and most restaurants downtown cannot accomodate us. Z'Tejas doesn't have a big enough room, Moonshine's larger space was expensive and would have required a tent for a rain plan, Lambert's can't fit more than 60 seated... etc. It's been frustrating!  We will probably go with the Shoreline Grill or the Palm Door (an event space downtown with catering by Pink Avocado.)
Just fyi, the Zilker Clubhouse is only reserved through a somewhat convoluted and confusing lottery process months in advance.

For casual you can do Iron Works BBQ. It's really close to moonshine. That's where we had our rehearsal dinner. They can accomidate up to 45 out on their covered porch for private parties. It ended up being about $22 a person with alcohol.

La condessa is one of my favorite restaurants and it is YUMMY. Plus, the place is beautiful!
