Creepy Mother/Son Dance?

I know their dance is her choice and I am not going to say 'boo' about it, but let me just put it to you (I wanted to crack up) she wants their dance to be "Wild World" by Cat Stevens. Doesn't that just make you lift a brow? Especially with lyrics like "it's hard to get by, just on a smile girl"

...can I get a l-o-l? (ps. FI is in total agreement that it's a ridiculous pick, but she is so sensitive, it's easier to just go with it)

Re: Creepy Mother/Son Dance?

  • Was it a song they sang to when he was really little so it means something to her?   Does seem like a strange choice.
  • I asked the same thing, and he just gave me this wide eyed stare and said "She just likes Cat Stevens, I don't know why it has to be this Cat Stevens..."

Whatever, FI and I are still snickering about it. It's either that it's or favorite song ever, or she is trying to tell us that she desperately hates me and doesn't want him to get married. (via "you say you want to start something new, and it's breaking my heart you're leaving, baby I'm grieving." but I guess she hopes he "won't be a sad girl")

  • I couldn't think of all the lyrics so i listened to it on youtube...and YES WEIRD!!!!!!! it actually says beware at some point in the song.....omgsh lol is she actually like trying to tell him to beware???? haha im sorry that sux.....maybe have your FI be like "mom, listen to the lyrics, they can kind of seem offensive, and you don't want it to come off that way do you?"  Maybe she didnt think of it that way?

  • After spending the past few hours trying to be jocular about this, everyone has told me how inappropriate it is, my coworker just said, "I remember that song, my mom listened to it on repeat when she got divorced. Total break up jam."

FI and I are going to go through our iTunes and listen to all of the Cat Stevens we have, scouf his memory for random and endearing moments so he can approach her with both a new Cat Stevens song AND a memory it goes hand in hand with.

It's just a downright inappropriate (and kind of funny until they actually dance to it at our wedding) song!

  • I was at a wedding recently where the father/daughter dance was the "Red Red Wine."  It was a real winner with lyrics like:

    Red, red wine
    Stay close to me
    Don't let me be alone
    It's tearin' apart
    My blue, blue heart
  • This is so funny and creepy all at the same time.  All the mother/son dance songs have creepy undertones.
  • The only appropriate response to having that song at your wedding is a big "H--l no!" What is she thinking?

my cousin danced with his mother to this song.  the story goes, when he was a little boy (like four), they were in the car together and this song came on.  he said "im going to dance with you to this at my wedding someday."  so they did.

so sometimes a song may seem silly but it has a special meaning.

See, in that case, all you have to do is have the DJ or someone tell the story, and poof, instant non-creepy.  Even if it's like, IDK, Baby Got Back.

  • Maybe you can talk her into another Cat Stevens song?  How about "Morning Has Broken" - it's a hymn, actually.
  • That is creepily amusing.

If it makes you feel better, she wanted to dance with BIL to  Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up," because "that's what he does for her".
