Raise a glass to the roaring twenties???

Is anyone else planning a themed wedding? Just wondering what others are doing. Share any ideas or thoughts. I plan to have a 1920's/1930's themed wedding.

We are going to go more towards the non-traditional side and have a lot of fun with our theme, but still keep it elegant and classy. Some ideas I have are:

Replace traditional wedding cake with NY cheesecake (saves lots of money and is very in tune with the period)

Instead of a traditional first dance FI and I are going to learn swing dancing.

Finger foods

Lots of feathers/crystals/pearls

Setting up a cigar rolling station for guest. (Also FI wedding gift)

Re: Raise a glass to the roaring twenties???

  • Love it! I've been thinking along these lines, too, and am also thinking of

Instead of champagne at cocktail hour doing two signature martinis- one he loves, one I love... for that speakeasy feel

For Favors, have feather boas for the ladies, fedoras for the men, or long pearl beads for the ladies, also feathered headbands would be fun (Ebay!)

Using vintage crystal candelabras for centerpieces

Also learn the Charleston and the Lindy Hop!

  • those are good ideas also. I did see something for favors also that was kind of like a fact sheets with different things about the 1920's on it. I thought it could be an easy DIY favor. The centerpieces sound fabulous. I love the feather vases but they are super expensive.

    Love the roaring twenties!

If you do go with champagne, see if you can't use those classy short champagne glasses, and play lots of period music.

  • There was a BEAUTIFUL 1920s wedding featured in my local Knot magazine. Here is the link:

I second the old fashioned champagne glasses. We bought some crystal ones to use as our toasting flutes, PIB. I think one of the most important things you can do to set a vintage mood is music. We are playing mainly 1940s, some 1930s, for our wedding but if you make a jazzy playlist it will set the 1920s vibe.

  • Love the 20's! Very fun!

We are doing an Old Hollywood theme for our reception!  We have black & white postcards of old stars & starlets that will be the table markers instead of numbers. FI & I were in his hometown last weekend to visit his family and we scored some things at an antique mall to use as decorations. Old Life magazines and some sheet music from different movies and Hollywood events.

Decor is ivory tablecloths, black runner, and red carnations in fishbowl vases.  We have red carpet for the parent & bridal party entrance, some Hollywood stars (Walk of Fame style) etc. When we present the bridal party & parents with their gifts at the RD, we're doing it Academy Award style--the MOH & Best Man will be "Best Supporting Actress/Actor", his dad & stepmom (who are doing our photography) will get the "Oscars" for Best Cinematography & Film Editing etc.  And we'll all be introduced at the reception as having won our respective Oscars!

  • We are also doing a 1920s/30s theme (I would also like to incorporate a "fall" theme since we are being married in the fall... maybe just use fall colors or line up carved white luminary pumpkins at the reception.) FI is going to wear a fedora and wants our first dance to be to a song from that time period. I would suggest checking Amazon.com for compilations of 1920s music- I got several awesome cds from there. Laughing

  • We're kinda doing this as well. My FI wanted to wear a "zoot suit" and because it's HIS day too, I wanted to go along with it. So I decided that the bridesmaids will wear flapper dresses. All the girls seem thrilled by this and since I found one for 130 dollars that's more "modern" and something they can wear again - they are all for it.
I plan on wearing a cheap flapper dress at the reception as well. I still want a wedding dress but since I hate spending money it's not going to be 10,000 dollar gown (exaggeration on the price but you get the point). I also have this huge fear of some idiot spilling something on my dress. I work in a bar and see this happen a lot, so to avoid me slapping someone upside the head for ruining my dress, I'll avoid the hassle all together and wear something I won't care about.

My FI and I are also going to learn a swing dance to surprise our guests with. The only person that knows of this is my mother. We are decorating the reception hall with a "gangster" theme as well - complete with cut outs of our shadows with "guns". We're also going to ask our guests - if they want - to dress in this style as well. We plan on having the fedoras, feathers and boas as well. Our colours are going to be turquoise and a lime green.

  • Your ideas all sound fabulous. I am changing what I orginally wanted though. We have changed our dream venue as the Art Museum near us. They keep the Cincinnati wing open for guest to view. I am thinking we are going to have a lot of 1920's greater cincinnati theme worked into ours. Still go with the 20's theme and stuff but go a little more traditional too. Kind of classy elegance of the 20's and 30's. I like the idea of the cut outs too. Since the art museum has many strict guidelines on decorations I want to build a lighted city back drop for gues to take pictures in. That is something that we would be allowed to have. If any one else comes up with more idea please let me know. My colors will be lime green and candy apple red.
