I'm thinking either a month, or a month and a half. I'd like to do a month and a half, because I know we'll be anxious on our final count, but that could be pushing it...
We did exactly 4 weeks - I wish we would have only done 3 because there were still a number of people we had to contact after the deadline that were still trying to make plans. I guess we have a lot of procrastinating friends & family.
ETA - our final numbers weren't due back until 5 days before.
I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.

Our date is 10/11 and we asked for RSVP's to be back by 8/15......half of our guests are coming from the UK and most of them are already booked anyway. We sent our invites out last week.
Our RSVP is 4 weeks- 9/1. Our final payment is due to our venue on that day, but we are on the hook for a large minimum anyway, so that's what our payments are based on. Our final guest count is due 10 days prior.

What Trashy said except my RSVP date is Sept 19th. Final estimated payment is due Sept 14th. Wedding on Oct 14
Most of our guests have already booked their flights, so I already know a lot of the "yes" guests, there are only 12 guests on my side who are still "maybe" out about 53 who would have to fly. Ben only has 4 "maybe" that would need to book a flight.
We did 5 weeks as well, because our hotel block ended 30 days out. That gave a couple of the procrastinators time to still book a room at a decent price.
We sent the invites at six months and asked for them back two months later, when we really had another three weeks before it really mattered; that gave us three weeks to call people who ignored the date and it would still have given them enough time to get a reasonable plane ticket.
I was on the same page as VG. I sent my invites out months in advance to give people time to decide and look for decent airfare and RSVP's were due back 2 months before the date. But even with that much time people still didn't send theirs back. I felt it was very rude
Our wedding day is 1/28/2012. Our numbers are due to the venue on 12/20/2011. So we are asking for an RSVP by 12/14/2011. That is like 6 weeks prior! I think 5-6 weeks is okay Just be sure to send the invites out a little earlier.
Our date is also 8/27 and we did 5 weeks out, our RSVP date is 7/22 because I wanted to have enough time to reach out to people before needing my counts in.
Wedding is 11.12.11, RSVP September 23rd, which is 7 weeks before. I need final numbers for some stuff by October 12th, so that leaves me two and a half weeks to round up stragglers. My bridal shower is also smack in the middle of that 2.5 weeks, so I wanted to account for that since nothing will get done that weekend. I sent STDs in March and pretty much know at this point who will be coming or not. We invited only close family and friends.
We sent invites at 6 months out and asked for RSVP at 2 months out. If I had it to do all again I would make it later. Maybr a month out instead of 2. It was a pain in the neck to get people to send them back and we had someone RSVP yes then decide not to go.

I have a question for you - do you think that's because the invites initially went out at 6 months, or that the RSVP itself was due at 2 months? Do you think that person would have RSVPed "accurately" if the invites went out at 3 months? Just curious :)

We had someone change their mind 48 hours prior and let me know via Facebook; so it could be worse.
The nice thing though is a friend of mine flies for Southwest and is based out of Vegas and he had declined previously because he thought he'd be out of town so I called him and asked if anything had changed; his schedule had so he took her spot lol.
I wish I knew. I probably could have held off on invites, but my initial thought was to have plenty of notice for people to book travel plans. Especially since our wedding was in June and I figured prices would be high. But, that person could have just been a flake. I don't know the person well since it was a distant friend of H. But part of me wonders if I still should have held off on rsvp date.

I understand :) I think we're going to send the actual invites at about 3-4 months... who knows, I still have time. I haven't sent STDs yet! LOL.
You shouldn't have to send out invitations months and months in advance if you send STDs. I mean the people know the who, what, when and where at that point. Why do they need an invitation to finally do something - like book a flight or a room? People are lame.
(note that I sent an STD to every person I invited.) Those went out in February-6 months out.

Did you send out STDs? If so, when did you send those?
Our was about 2.5 weeks I didn't over invite so I wasn't really to worried about not having enough room and the resturant didn't need my final number till that week.

Re: How far in advance did you ask for RSPV's back by?
ETA: We're kicking around April 7th-ish for our RSVP, so right around 6 weeks.
ETA - our final numbers weren't due back until 5 days before.
Now with more wedded bliss.
