Venue help! Non-traditional spot for up to 200 people?

Hi all, I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with the perfect venue! My problem is that we have so many people to invite, and I really don't want just a big banquet hall in a hotel or country club. I'm looking for something a little more unique, and have been searching barns, mansions, museums, etc. Has anyone found a great place in the greater Boston area that is big enough to hold 200 people but still has some character and won't break the bank? I'd love to keep the reception to $20-25k. Also, we're hoping to find something still available for August 2012. Thanks!

What about the Aquarium and Museum of Science they might be in your range, and I think they'd be able to fit that many. The Red Lion Inn in Cohasset is a large barn, not sure if that's too far for you though...

You can also look into a lot of estates, I know there is one in Dedham, I forget the names of them but Waltham and Weston also have some, You can try some colleges too, Good Luck.

Try the Rockport Art Museum in Rockport, MA.  There are also some places in Lowell, old factotries converted to venue space that sound interesting, Bell Tower?  GL

Maybe take a look at Shining Tides.  They do up to 200 people. It is definitely not a traditional banquet facility.  And since they are still an unknown in the wedding field, they might sit have open dates in August.   They have an exclusive cater with Russell Morin, which I've heard can work with budgets. (We are getting married there but have not met with the cater yet for our Fall 2012 wedding.)

We looked at some estates and ended up going with the Pierce House in Lincoln, MA. There's also the Codman Estate also in Lincoln and the Gore Place in Waltham. Also looked at the Lars Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, though you'd have to get tent to hold 200 people.

We had our reception at the Harry Parker Boathouse in Brighton. The rental fee is reasonable and you can bring in your own caterer. Inside it's pretty minimalist but decorations can really transform the space. The location is great with two cool decks overlooking the Charles River. I'm pretty sure they can fit up to 200 people and you can expand outside if needed.

It's more modern than a lot of the other places we looked at.... inside it's pretty minimalist but decorations can really transform the space.
