I'm watching hgtv...a couple currently has a 4 bedroom, 4 1/2 bathroom home and are moving to Florida to get more space. Each family member ( parents, 1 year boy, 3 year old boy, 6ish year old girl) has their own bathroom plus one and you still need more space? Oh, and they also wante a room just to display their MSU stuff. Now I'm all for college pride, and god knows we have Dh's MSU stuff all over the apt, but really, a whole room for nothing but?

I wish I could buy a 2.5 million dollar house....their bathrooms are the size of most small houses!

An entire room is warranted simply due to its awesomeness. I don't have any room to spare besides my sig, so that's where it goes for now.

Houses just keep getting bigger and families keep getting smaller. I also find that all the newer houses that are being built all look relatively the same and are huge! It would be refreshing to see someone build a modest sized house without tearing down a forest so that their spouse and one kid can live in it.

Really though, if you can afford it, and want it, why not?

Maybe they want more children. Maybe they plan on having in-laws move in. Who cares?

I grew up ALWAYS sharing a bedroom. I didn't have my own room until I was 21. I would've LOVED to have my own space before that.

And it'd be pretty nice not to have coordinate bathroom times with 3 other people.

We always had a 4 bedroom house and 2 bathrooms. 4 kids and 4 adults sharing that much space is not that fun.

And with bigger closet space and bigger rooms, you can be more organized and have more room to do what you want.

I'm all for it.

Oh I'm completely on board with having rooms for each person, that's why we're getting a 3 bedroom. I just think its a bit odd when I watch shows or have looked at houses where there are sooo many bathrooms. One house we looked at was a 2 bedroom, 3 full bathroom.

Or my aunt and uncle...who have an 8 bedroom, 5 bathroom house with a living room the size of a small theatre, just for themselves.

I am for it to an extent. We all want extra space in our homes, it's very freeing. But I'm not going to move into or build a 5 or 6 bedroom home with my one or two kids. On average most people don't have over 3 children anymore. I just think it's ironic how the average family size is shrinking and houses are HUGE.

Good points, but people also have to consider re-sale value.

For a house, it probably has more value or more appeal if it has more rooms/bathrooms.

I mean, if you want a 2/2, get a condo. If you want a 3 or 4/3 or 4, you probably want a house.

katiew- That house is HUGE. 8/5? But did they have children there at one point? Are they just waiting for the market to turn a bit before they try to sell? Do they host relatives/friends for weekends, extended time frequently?

My parents summer beach home has 5 bedrooms, 4 full bathroom and 2 half bathroom + an outdoor shower. Just for the 2 of them. Now yes we go and visit, but really it's only twice a year all the rooms are taken. I think it's crazy. But at the same time appreciate all the extra room for the 5 days a year I'm there. (their other house is 'only' 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms for the 2 of them).

Alexia, nope nope and nope. They built the house about... 10 years ago and have never had nor want kids. Their family (well, besides us) lives within 10 miles so I don't think they ever have anyone stay over.

I honestly think they just wanted to play with building since she was a realtor and he was a construction foreman. It is crazy tricked out, heated floors, 2 fridges, 2 stoves (they don't cook), huge glass window that has to be a good 30' high by 20' wide. And the crazy part? They built the sucker for less than a 2 bedroom condo goes in my area! Safe to say, if Dh and I ever fly to Minnesota to visit relatives I'm asking for a stay at their place.

they sound like my parents. They have always had nice kitchens, 2 ovens, 2 stoves, 2 dishwashers, 2 sinks and my mom rarely cooks, if they do they do it's on the grill. But there reason was for resale. They move every few years.

That would make sense. I know when we were looking at houses our realtor kept talking about resale.

It did get annoying though when he would occasionally go "oh you could throw in new carpet and sell it for 20k more in a year. Um...scuse me? It's taken us a year to get a closing date on a house, I'm not doing this all over again for at least 10 years!

Actually a few weeks ago I read a newspaper article that new homes being built tend to be smaller. Not so many McMansions being built.

Ours is 3 br/and 2 or 3 baths with a 4th room downstairs and plumbing installed for an additional bath.

We have gotten crap for having such a large house for two, but honestly, we a) don't know if the kids will be living with us and b) space is something you really can't get more of once you need it. Always better to have too much than not enough.

We bought our house last year 5Bed/3Bath (with a bonus room) last year and we had a few weird looks, since it's only 2 of us...But the market was in our favor and I am happy about it...Until I am cleaning it

So what people may overindulge in their house buying and why so many bathrooms for each kid? Who cares? If that is how they want to spend their money, why not let them? Sounds like alot of ungrateful, jealous snobs on this site!
Just be grateful for what YOU have and do not concern yourself with everyone elses blessings. Do something about it.. CREATE YOUR OWN!!

I believe I'm the only one who stated that I think it's incongruous that families are now smaller and larger homes are being built despite the increased costs for construction and energy. This isn't something I hold an aggressive sentiment over, I was just expressing my views regarding the excessive space that people claim they need. I also don't think people should live in tight quarters if they can help it, but there doesn't seem to be a medium anymore. </div><div>You saying "create your own!!" is presumptuous that people whom share my opinion are not able to buy bigger houses than they may need.</div><div>
