When should I order my cake

This has been an issue of debate between FI and I...what do you say is the minimum time to leave between ordering and the wedding. We are having 350-400 people so I say a min of 5-6months because that is a big thing to orchestrate and it might be hard for someone to fit us in. He says 3 months is even to much time...opinions please!

When is your wedding? Mine is July and my baker said to schedule our tasting/ place the order 3-6 months in advance. With a guest list that large, I would order it 6 months out.

I think this completely depends on the popularity of the baker you want to use and the time of year of your wedding.

Here, if you want one of the popular bakeries in a peak month like May or October, I'd book as soon as 12-8 months out.  For a less popular bakery or a popular bakery in the off-season you can probably get away with placing the order 2-3 months out.  It just depends who you want and when.

That said, you're 6 months out.  It can't hurt to book now if you have your venue and ceremony booked already and the date is locked in.

Agreed that it totally depends on the baker, time of year, etc.  We ordered our cake in August for our December wedding...that was what our baker recommended.  I'd base it on whatever your baker suggests!

It definitely depends on the baker. I contacted the bakery we want to use to find out how early we need to order and they said no earlier than 3 weeks. We're getting married in June having about 160 people.

Our baker is pretty popular. I've already gone for a tasting and put a rough-cut order in. We still have to finalize some details though.

I'd ask your baker what they recommend.

Most bakers will allow you to reserve a space up to a year in advance.  So you give the baker a deposit, select a flavor, and give the approximate size of the cake, etc.  You can then usually go back with a month left and finalize the cake.  So if you invited 300 and only 230 RSVP'd yes, you can update your order to be for a cake for 230 people, not 300.

The issue with my baker was not only time to make the cake, but how many they could deliver on any given day.  They ran out of delivery time slots before they reached the number of cakes they could produce.  There's no way you want to face having to pick up a cake large enough for your party. Ordering earlier rather than later is always best.

The baker I used only took 1 wedding per weekend.  The summer months booked about 8 months in advance (that is wedding season here) and winter months booked about 4 months in advance (off season here).

It totally depends on the bakery.  The last thing you want is to find out all the bakeries are already booked.  What is the harm in booking now?  I wanted to get all my vendors booked early.  I didn't iron out the details until closer to the date but the searching part was over and the rest was pretty stress free.
