How much to spend on a Honeymoon?

My FI and I decided we're okay with spending more to get what we want for our Honeymoon because it might be a long time before we get to go on a vacation like it again! But how much is too much? I was talking with a friend who was recently married, and he thought we were spending too much! Apparently his Honeymoon cost about half as much as ours did. So, I'm just wondering, how much did YOU spend on your Honemoon and where did you go?

Re: How much to spend on a Honeymoon?

  • we are spending $2600 on the actual airfare and resort (which is all inclusive, so also the food and booze) but i know we will spend more once we get there on excursions and additional food if we eat out of our resort.  i think we are spending too much ONLY because we barely have the money.
  • A gift from my in-laws was our airfare and they gave us one of their timeshares to stay in so we were able to do a lot on our honeymoon.  I think we ended up spending about $3,500 in the end.  We did a lot of activities, including a helicopter ride which was about $600 for the both of us.  The food and drinks were expensive and we also bought gifts for our family and some honeymoon reminders for us.

  • We're taking a cruise and the total of the cruise will be around $1200 (we got a certificate to help with the cruise cost when we purchased our condo--hence why we're taking a cruise).  My mother and her boyfriend will be purchasing our airfare for us with their frequent flyer miles.

I put that we're spending between $1501-$3000 because of the excursions on shore that we're going to be partaking in.  I'm not 100% sure which we'll be doing, but it's certain to cost more than $300 for the 5 days :)

  • We spent @ 850 for airfare and accomodations, 200 for a rental car for a week, 450 for a cruise and stay trip which includes a one day cruise to Grand Bahama Island, a Hotel stay in a 5 star hotel, food, drinks and transportation. We also have a private yacht chartered for one day which was 350 plus misc. expenses @ 400 for the week so $1,850
  • We're going to Spain, and we spent $2000 on airfare and $750 for an apartment. I think we'll take between $1500-$3000 for food, museums and any other expenses. So around $5000.
  • We are spending less than $1500 going to Curacao - south Caribbean, little traveled (helps cost), great diving.  And it's outside the hurricane danger zone.  The resort is all-inclusive, so there isn't a huge amount of worry with food and such, but we'll still have some left from the $1500 for other things and activities.

But we're lucky - we have frequent flyer miles, so the flights are less than $100... FH's passport might push us over, but since we're doing other traveling I'm not counting that as a honeymoon expense.
  • I think it's best to think of it not by a dollar amount, but

    1) by what you can afford and
    2) by what you want out of it.

What I spent on mine is a reflection of my priorities, so I don't think your friend has the right to get all Judgy-McJudgerton on you for doing something different.

So, we spent 3 weeks on Maui, including having a wedding there.

    We spent
    1000$ on car rental
    3000$ on condo rental
free airfare as part of a wedding present
    1000$ activities/eating out/hosting our guests

We did a lot of free stuff - snorkeling, hiking, etc too.
  • We spent around $2200 for flight, transfers and hotel at an all-inclusive in Cozumel for a week. So this is not counting excursions and other misc. purchases.

I say if you're comfortable with what you are spending (i.e. not going into debt over it) and what you plan on doing, just do it and don't pay any attention to what everyone else thinks. It's YOUR honeymoon and you only get do it once. Go and have fun!

  • Ours will be somewhere towards the high end of your second choice or the low end of your third choice. We're going to Paris for a week. It is actually less than what we spent on our last vacation, which was 11 days in the UK.

  • Ours is on the higher end too, but as pp's mentioned do what you can afford. This will probably be the biggest and most lavish trip you ever take, but don't go into debt over it. We booked our HM 13 months in advance and have planned ahead for that reason.

  • We're spending about $1,000 in airfare, about $2,000 for resort and then food, drinks and excursions in Aruba so we're hoping around $5 -7,000.  Our airfare and half the resort is a gift from my parents and we've saved up for the rest.  For us we want a trip that we'll remember for a lifetime, but we obviously don't want to go into debt for it either, otherwise we'd be spending a month in Europe which I really wanted to do but don't have time/money just yet for that ;)

  • Your poll isn't showing up on my dinosaur computer, but we spent about $2000 total for our six day Disney HM.

  • It's more about what you can afford and what is important to you.  I know people who spent a ton on certain aspects of their wedding that I wouldn't spend half of on.  It's all about what you and your FI want.   We really wanted a trip of a lifetime something special that we'd always remember so we were willing to spend more.  We're spending about $11K total costs for a 2 week trip to South Africa.
  • We're spending about $4000, total dollar not in yet but a 7 night cruise in a junior suite with a balcony on royal caribbean and that includes air.  How much cash will we spend on our excursions will be decided much closer to our wedding which is not until Aug of next year.
  • it dosen't matter what anyone else spent. spend what you can afford for what you want.
people will always say it's too long, too short, too pricey, too cheap, and on and on and on. do what oyu want and keep your mouth shut about the price :)

  • We're going to Hawaii and staying in an oceanfront room. Airfare, hotel, one upgrade, breakfast buffet each day and car for 7 days was around $4200.
  • We are planning our honeymoon to Alaska, and will be spending about $2000 on airfare/lodging, and another $2000 on food, activities (helicopter ride, glacier tour, food),  and a rental car for 7 days.
  • The FFIL and FMIL got our hotel for us with their "points."  It's a lot like a timeshare, but you buy points and spend them going to wherever you feel like going, whenever you feel like going.  Then, FBIL got our airline tickets for us as a wedding gift (using air miles.)  It's an all-inclusive, so all we're really paying for is excursions/activities.
  • My honeymoon budget is somewhere between $4500 and $5000.  That is with a Disney Cruise Line 4-night cruise to the Bahamas including spa massages and shore excursions, a 4-night stay at Disney World including a day at Downtown Disney complete with Planet Hollywood dinner and Cirque du Soleil La Nouba tickets, and all of our travel and food expenses.

I should say that we are saving money by driving rather than flying.  We are about an 8-hour drive from Orlando, so that's not bad.  I've been to Disney World 9 times and my fiance's been 3 times, and we've both been in cars all of those times, including once together with my family.

The honeymoon is our splurge on each other.  ;-)

For most of my life, my dream has been to go to Australia and for the past few years, I have wanted to go to Japan.  So we are going to Tokyo, Cairns, Sydney and Auckland for 14 days.  We haven't booked our flights but they will cost approx $7k alone.  But this is our last hurrah so to speak since we are a little older (mid / late 30's) and will start trying to have kids not too long after we get back.

But I think how much to spend on a honeymoon is entirely personal.  We are willing to and lucky / worked hard enough to be able to take a monster trip and want to do so.
