Dress regret/advice pleaseplease!!

My wedding is 1 year and almost 5 months away. I have gone dress shopping, never to find "the one" but I found what my preferences are, and what looks good on me.  I recently found one of my few picks for only $300 on the classifieds here.
I splurged and bought it, I could never pass that price up. So I ended up with my Casablanca 1856:

I do LOVE this dress, but it's a bit fuller than the rest of the dresses I was going for. I am having an outdoorsy wedding, at the end of July in Chicagoland area. (HOT!)

Before this purchase and STILL I have been in love with the Pronovias Oceano:

I called all of the dress stores around me and no one has it because it was an older collection, and I can't find it used anywhere online where it is still available, but I can't seem to get it out of my head.... and I feel like I made a mistake with the other gown, although it is ABSOLUTELY my second choice... I don't feel like that is good enough.

I need your help knotties! Thanks ahead of time!

Re: Dress regret/advice pleaseplease!!

  • The number one rule of dress shopping is when you find a dress, stop shopping.

In your case, I think you started looking WAY too early.  At least you got a good price, so if you don't end up wearing the dress you bought already, you're only out $300.  By the way, that dress is amazing and looks awesome on you!

I would recommend ending your dress-search for now, and hang onto the dress you have.   In about 6 months, maybe try going to a few more dress shops to see if they have anything new in, or try on stuff for a second time.

  • I have definitely ended my dress shopping already, it's the one from BEFORE I found this one that I'm stuck on, but I pushed it to the "not possible" pile... but still love it.
I don't plan on shopping anymore, or finding anything else to make me regret, and I knew I bought this to early. That price was just too hard to pass up!

  • If it's not available and you haven't even tried it on then stop thinking about it. I ended up with a totally different dress then the pictures I printed out.

I think the dress you have is gorgeous on you and perfect for an outdoor wedding, but maybe what you really want is a simple lace dress--so go try some on. It doesn't have to be the same as the picture and maybe you'll get a feel if an all lace dress works better for you or doesn't.

  • I think your dress looks great, it is similar enough AND you can't argue with the price. Be happy with what you've got and stop looking :)

  • Personally, I think the second dress looks very ballroom wedding, not at all outdoorsy. I LOVE the first one! It reminds me of my dress :) and I think it looks great on you.

I had the same experience of wishing I had gotten another dress, but honestly, you got a great deal on a BEAUTIFUL dress that will completely fit in with the look of your wedding. Spend that extra money on other stuff, and call it a day :)
  • The second dress looks like it would be heavier and hotter than the first dress actually, just because of the material.

  • Thank you, guys! You've been very helpful!
I have tried MANY light lace dresses on and they all were great and less heavy than my dress, but always to plain at the bottom, I liked that the oceano had the layers.

I'll try to keep it off my mind, and maybe someday (since I have plenty of time) I'll find it for cheap randomly across the internet!

  • I think it's beautiful. If you feel it's too full, I suggest you find a great tailor/alterations person to pull the right amount of tulle out until you're in love again. Get them to alter this to your body and it will fit like a glove the way the *other* dress seems to appear. I think the second dress is lovely and frankly it's the way it fits the model that I think might be swaying you, but I also think that -- with the right investment in the proper dress nips and dress tucks -- you will remember why you fell in love with this gown in the first place. It is YOU.

  • Ellen said exactly what I was going to say.  Only worded better.
  • Sounds like the second dress isn't an option because they don't make it anymore.  Once a new season comes in they discontinue items including bridal gowns and BM dreses.  Stick with what you have it looks beautiful!!!

  • Love love love the first dress! Don't even glance at pics of other wedding dresses.. The dress you have will be perfect because you're going to marry your FI while wearing it...that's all that matters :)

    I agree! Well said!
  • I agree with PPs - a LOT of brides thought they have picked out "the one!" from a photo of a model in the dress, but when they try it on themselves they end up not liking it as much and end up buying a different dress.  If you haven't actually tried the 2nd dress on in person, I wouldn't dwell on it too much - the dress you have looks gorgeous!

  • I'm one of those people who hunts down real brides in the dresses. I bought the one I have out of impulse after HATING the picture with the model, and never trying it on.
