Advice: Newport Wedding Labor Day Weekend

Hi everyone,

New to this board and considering a wedding in Newport the Sunday of Labor day weekend (2012).  Is Newport crazy that weekend?  Will it be so busy that hotels will be hard to book, rehearsal dinner hard to schedule, etc?  My other alternative dates are in August and I'm not sure which dates will get me the most flexibility, although from testing 2011 dates for hotels they seem more expensive in August.

Any thoughts appreciated!!!

We visit Newport every year for labor day weekend.  Our family has a beach house in Middletown and we have always spend the holiday there.  Newport is always a little busy but that's what makes it fun.  We usually have comapny and they stay at different places and never have any trouble getting a room.  July 4th weekend is the one to avoid.  Good luck!

To answer your question simply. Yes. It will be more expensive that weekend.
Also, you won't get the same" Sunday " rates an discounts that your would normally get on a non-holiday weekend from vendors.

However, there are ways around this. If you are looking for less expensive accommodations- people could always stay in nearby hotels in Warwick. They can either drive the 30ish minutes to Newport or you could provide a shuttle.

chose local vendors (in Newport) for things like florist and cakes... because delivery charges from outside the area may be more expensive on a holiday, busy weekend.

Newport is really busy that weekend- but then again its a great fun weekend for tourists.

I suggest doing your rehearsel outside of newport to save money as well.

Have you thought about doing a reception in other towns other than Newport. Like in Jamestown at the Bay Voyage Inn or Middletown?

Other than your own hotel- if you are worried about expenses for guests than offer less expensive options in Providence, Warwick, or even Seekonk.

Typically you will see the highest prices Memorial Day-Labor day down there. Since it is a tourist, beach location....there isn't much you can do about that.
Something in June might be slightly less expensive since its a bit cooler then and the beaches wont be full.

As a Memorial Day weekend bride, I can tell you that is one of the BUSIEST weekends in Newport as Labor Day weekend was our second choice date but I saved a little more money booking Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. It worked out for it b/c half of our guests are out of town. We did hotel block in Providence (where are from), Seekonk (J&W Inn) and in Middletown which is very close to our venue, Easton Beach Rotunda. In general, Newport equals expensive. I actually avoided Newport vendors b/c the prices were higher even with the lower delivery cost. The only exception was Rentals Unlimited, the delivery cost and pricing of what we needed to rent was the same compared to Quality Rentals and two other rental companies.

We got married on July 4 which was basically the Sunday of a long holiday weekend since most people had off on Monday.  We had no issues getting hotels and we definitely did receive a few discounted Sunday rates despite the fact that it was a holiday.  I say go for it!!

We are getting married in newport on the Friday of Labor Day weekend this year. We blocked off hotel rooms at the Best western ( about 2 miles from the venue)We got it at a super low rate of like $150. I have no idea whether it is going to be super busy or not so I am telling everyone to get there earlier incase there is traffic etc.  Our venue also gave us a really good deal even though it was Labor Day weekend. I would do it!

We are getting married there on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.  I would book your room blocks now and send out Save the Dates ASAP.  Not only will there be a lot of tourists there, but there is also a famous Irish Festival happening in Newport that weekend.  However, there will be SO MUCH to do for your guests and it is such a beautiful location.  Good luck planning and congratulations!
Married to my best friend since September 4, 2011!
