March 2012 Weddings

Rehersal dinner question

I need your help ladies. I'm trying to plan the rehearsal dinner and the logistics are driving me crazy. We have from 2 to 7 to decorate the church the night before the wedding. The rehearsal starts at 7. I figure that will go about a half hour so that puts us at 730. Anywhere we would do the rehearsal dinner at would take us like a half hour to get there so we would be looking at starting the dinner at 8 pm. I feel like that is too late to do a big dinner with the BP, OOTners, and family (which is like 50 people). So I guess my question(s) are: do we have to do a dinner and who should we invite? Is it appropriate to just do the bridal party?

ETA: our wedding is at noon the next day so many of us will be having to get up fairly early the next day.

Re: Rehersal dinner question

  • It doesn't HAVE to be a dinner. Have you considered having a lunch instead or dinner the night before the rehearsal? Those are becoming more and more common. You can invite whatever seems fitting, whether that be just the WP and family, or with friends and some SO's as well. There's no written rule that says it HAS to be only these people, or can't be others. Good luck! :)
  • With that timeline, I would probably just do a lunch.

  • I've been to lots of late-night rehearsal dinners.  But if that bothers you, my brother and SIL had their rehearsal the afternoon of the wedding, so obviously we didn't have a rehearsal dinner.  Instead, we had a "Groom's Dinner" the night before.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

  • I think lunch would be a good option, or late night munchies with just the BP.
Our RD will just be the BP, my parents, and FIs family... don't feel obligated to invite OOT guests, you'll end up with a party almost as big as the wedding!
  • My sister's wound up being later so she just did a "cocktail" rehearsal dinner.  We had drinks, appetizers (veggies, dips, butlered hor'duerves (sp?) and a small sandwich station).  It kept the party informal and quick.  Most of us were out of there by 10pm.  Good Luck!!

  • If you weren't getting up super early the next day for the wedding, I would say an 8pm dinner isn't totally horrible. However, since the guest list is so large and you will be waking up nice and early, I'd definitely recommend doing a lunch instead.
