South Asian Weddings

New but not so new :)

Hi everyone,
I stumbled across this section of the wedding boards and have been an avid forum poster on the wedding channel.  We got married March 2009 as a West Indian meets South Indian :)  We incorporated both cultures - Vedic and South Indian customs in our wedding and reception.

There are a lot of things that we did DIY to help bring down the cost of the wedding in Arizona, but as you know, Indian weddings can be quite large - we had about 300 guests at our wedding.

Hope to be of some help with q&a or chat just for fun :)

Thanks :) There's a fort up there - one of the few last ruins in the metropolitan Phoenix area :)

I couldn't believe that it would be 90°F, sunny, bright, and the first day of Spring :D

I worked with Parekhcards.com for the invitation and the wedding program.  I put together everything in word, and even the map - I drew it up in MS Paint!

Invitations and Programs and the favor boxes.

    The centerpieces were DIY -

I was able to use the wedding coordinator's inventory of cylinder vases, mirrors, low bowls, and acrylic rocks. For the wedding lunch (typical 7 curry, naan, rice) I simply did 3 fresh calla lillies (from costco.com) and water in the vase.  At the reception, we added two other cylinder tiers, candles, floating candles, and a mirror on a lot of the tables, and fresh gerbera daisies (costco.com) in a low bowl with floralytes from save-on-crafts.com.

At the wedding lunch, the table clothes were just the white ones, with the burgundy tie backs, at the reception, the same hall was transformed, with burgundy sheer table clothes over the white ones, and indian fancy chair covers.

We did DIY on the favors too - both the Caribbean rum cake - home made by my mom, in matching burgundy favor boxes, and gold tulle with two aluminum gold rings tying the ishopindian.com heart shaped diya, and the other ring for the thank you note.

Our mandap - we did strings of carnations and straws for the sides of the mandap (costco.com).  The mandap material, and the chair back covers at the reception were made from the same material.

The vedi, and the kund, (where the fire is held) was decorated with dyed rice about a week prior to the wedding.

As an engineer, I tend to draw up things --- put it on paper, and then do mock trials to see if it worked.  We had a 6 month engagement, and it was plenty of time to mess around with these DIY projects, go to work, and workout at the gym oh oh and look for a house too :D

Thanks for the welcome, if you have any questions, or specifics, I can post them :)

For the wedding, we did plasticthaali.com which are recycleable (after the food is washed off of them) for the 9 compartment plates.

Seriously, your DIY stuff is beautiful. I think it's great. I hope you don't mind, I may take some of your ideas when it comes time for my big day. It is nice to see such an inventive and smart bride who has ideas that everyone can benefit from. Bravo on your big day, it looks truly beautiful.

How much did it cut down on costs, do you mind if I ask?

Wow you did A LOT! Thanks for sharing! I think its nice to be able to DIY things for your wedding, it adds a more personal touch.

I am not a very crafty person, but we are going to DIY our "American" invites, programs, escort cards, etc. Well, all the "paper" stuff...

We started for a $100k kind of wedding - most of our relatives are from out of state - and handling 300 people (on this board, it might not sound like much ;) )

In the end we got it down to about $65,000 - two different sites, two meals for the guests - lunch and full dinner, and for the guests that arrived earlier in the week - Thursday, and Friday - Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, and a Chaiwalla on the stove at all times LOL

I saved up for about 3 years so that my parents didn't have to do too many things :)

Also, feel free to take ideas, and re-use them - I got most of our favor materials online, and did a lot of research!  Something practical that anyone can use, diya, and eating cake ;D  I have so many samples of candles that I'm trying to use up :D
