Newbie/Venue post: Which would you choose?

First time poster, long time lurker :)

My FI and I just got engaged last week. It was a big surprise and it's still kind of secret. He didn't have a ring when he decided to ask me to be his wife, he used a ring he had purchased for me as a gift before. We have since picked out a ring and are waiting for it to be completed. He will "propose" to me again when we have the ring and thats when we will tell everyone...we want to save ourselves having to explain *why*.

Anyway, we would love to get married on 9.22.12. Not a ton of time to plan. Definitely not an unlimited budget either. We had our sights set on Island Palms on Shelter Island. The price is right, Michael is amazing, and the place looks really great. Since then, we have spoken to a videographer and photographer who both felt that the location lacked a great place to film. I don't remember having that impression when I was there, but what do I know? I spent some time google searching Island Palms weddings and was able to find a lot of weddings and photographs from the locations. I found a lot of great shots and I'm not sure that I agree that it lacks a filming location.

This led us to start considered the Ultimate Skybox at Diamond View Tower. I'm not loving the prices there as much and I'm also concerned about the type of reception to have there. We are going to look at the space tomorrow, so this is purely speculation, but the space doesn't seem large enough to comfortable host 100 people for a sit down dinner. I've google searched weddings at this venue, and it seems that most people do a cocktail/tapas type reception instead, which would fit our personalities perfectly. Not to mention we live on 10th, right outside Petco Park ourselves, this is where we started our lives together as boyfriend/girlfriend, what a cool way to start our marriage. We would definitely consider another location for the ceremony, I'm not crazy about the outside area for the ceremony. I think it's on the smaller side and would prevent the photo/videographers from getting close to us (again, purely speculation). I love Centennial Park.

Anyway, I'd love to hear from you! What are your thoughts on each venue? Have any of you been married at either? If you have had or have been to a wedding at Ultimate Skybox, I would love to know what you did and an estimate of total costs. I would love to know of your experiences at both venues.

I'm so excited that I feel so qualified to post on this topic!!

I got married on October 16, 2011 at the Skybox! Our guest count was 110. And I've been to a wedding (sort of) at the Island Palms within the past week!! I'm sending you a private message. :)

First off - Congratulations!  Second - I noticed that you said " I love Centennial Park"..not from Nashville by chance are you?  (My hometown).  I ask because I am not familiar with a Centennial Park in San Diego :)  And Third - The Ultimate Skybox is actually a beautiful area. I work at Hotel Indigo down the street and we host a lot of wedding party sleeping accommodations because we are so close. If you book there, please let me know - I would love to quote you great rates for your wedding.  And finally - let us know how the site tour went. If you aren't in love with it and want to keep looking, definitely check out the Embarcadero/Seaport Village area if you want an outdoor wedding (but you also take a chance on weather).  And another suggestion is if you are into unique spaces, Culy Warehouse is a large open space where you can decorate for the ceremony and reception all in one spot. A GREAT example is a wedding that furnished from Lounge Appeal. Here is a link to their wedding to give you an idea of the space decorated.  (http://scottlawrencephotographs.com/2011/10/downtown-san-diego-wedding-kristy-clint/)

    Either way, Good luck!

    Thank you!!

I was referring to Centennial Park in Coronoado (I think that's what it's called). I'm actually from Boston, but I am dying to visit Nashville. Hopefully that is a trip we get to take after the wedding. :)

I think we had decided to keep our appointment to visit Skybox to eliminate it. We didn't think that it was something we would be able to work with in terms of price. After talking with Laura a little about the style of her wedding at Skybox, I saw it as more of a possibility. We were absolutely in love with the space, and Karen was amazing to work with. She had told us that 9.22 was not available and also had 1 hold ahead of us. Well, the morning of our site visit, the people that had booked that date cancelled and postponed for 2013. We decided that we loved the space and wanted to "push" the people that had it on hold before us. Karen contacted them and gave them 48 hours to make a decision or the space would be ours. Ironically enough, when we were on our way there, another person had contacted her about the same date.

I heard back from Karen yesterday and they decided to release the date! I am sending her all of our information today so that we can get the contacts drawn up! We have our venue and we couldn't be more happier with it!!! :o)

Courtney!  Good for you and congrats! I know going down the To-List and checking things off brings about a sigh of relief and makes room to keep moving forward in planning.  It's all going to work out!  And give me a call if you want to come by Hotel Indigo for a site visit for sleeping room accommodations! I'd love to help you check that off your list as well!!

    Happy Planning!
    Shelia
