Cake or Cupcakes? (another ? regarding my tiny budget) :)

As you all know, I am on a super tiny budget.  I just got word StripBurger will waive the cakecutting fee of $3pp (yikes!) if we do cupcakes (and a little cake for us to cut).  I will have anywhere between 30-50 guests (prob 40).  So I could potenially save $150 on cutting fees by doing cupcakes.  Also, if seems feeding my guests cupcakes would end up less expensive than feeding the same amount of guests cake (I'm assuming cakes are more work :)).  So with a super timy budget would you forego the traditional cake (it was probably one of the few 'tradtional' things we considered having) and do the small cake and cupcakes?  I'm thinking the Las Vegas round cake and cupcakes as seen recently with Krisstyle's cake. Or would it be wierd to do a white/traditional small round cake for cutting and fun cupcakes?

  • I don't think it's weird. I'm doing the same thing though so I might be biased.  I'm going to get a small six inch round cake for cutting and then a bunch of different mini cupcakes from Retro too.  I think it's more economical but it would also depend on your cake design and what the baker quotes you for it.  What I want for my cake design turned out to be a bit expensive, so I'd hate to see a quote for a full wedding cake for it.  Plus I love the mini cupcake idea because then everyone can try multiple flavours. :)

There have been lots of other brides on the knotties list that have done the same thing too, so I wouldn't worry about it.  Particularly if Stripburger is going to waive the cutting fees. ;)
  • If its concerning budget, I definitely would. I really like the small cake on top with the cupcakes!

  • I am doing cupcakes too and I am not concerned about the budget. I think it looks really nice and it is actually prettier for people to get a cupcake than a piece ofmcake which is usually just a square. Definitely wouldn't look weird or cheap in my opinion.

  • Awesome, thank you ladies!!  I'm excited to save some $$$ LOL :) I also like all the flavors we can potenially get...orignially we thought cupcakes, then changed to somethng more traditional but upon hearing the fee is waived for cupcakes I really started thinking cupcakes are the way to go.  I just didn't want it to look like a bday party but I looked at more pictures and I definitely think it can be really pretty with the towers etc.  Yay!

  • were doing mini cupcakes. 84 mini. 7 dozen plus 2 normal sized for fi and i and cupcake tower. Total with delivery and setup is 150 from Retro
  • Cupcakes are the rage now Frank! Haven't you heard? Lol...I personally prefer cupcakes to cake and we will have them at our reception. They are easier to serve and depending on where you get them can be a less expensive option.
  • I say "go for it" if you want to. Do whatever works for you, and it is a double win if it is more cost friendly... I went to a wedding a few weeks ago and they had cupcakes

Nice!  Are you planning fro 2 minis per person?  I definitely want a little something to do the cutesy 'feeding' each other thing.  Like the idea of two regular sized!  Then no 'cutting set' or whatever is need either... HMMMMM.  Thank you everyone!  Excited to have my cake and eat it too lol

  • I just placed my mini cupcake order w/ retro yesterday! Our venue will also waive the cake cutting fee for cupcakes. I ordered 3 mini cupcakes per person and then 2 regular sized cupcakes for FI and myself to feed each other. If you look on retro's website they have a link to their flickr account and you can see the cupcake towers all set up. Plus, ordering 12 doz mini cupcakes, our standard cupcakes, and delivery/set up is only ~$200. I'm sold!
