June 2013 Weddings

New here, need some advice!!

Hi everyone my fiance and I are planning our wedding next June. We have our reception hall booked along with DJ and photographer. We are doing our ceremony in the same place as reception hall for two reasons- we don't belong to a church, and saving a lot of money. My mom is angry we aren't doing it in a Catholic church but neither of us go to church. Anyways...

Our reception hall is a community center and it is very nice inside and works great EXCEPT the lighting..they only have those big florecent overhead lights..I hate those..there are a bunch of windows but I am not a fan of natural lighting either lol. We booked our DJ and got a whole lot of uplighting but we don't know how else we could make the room in just dimmed lighting..if we close all the curtains and only have uplights im afraid it will be too dark...is there anything I can do with those big florecent lights to make them dim? Anything I can buy to hang on the ceiling? I thought about only turning on a couple of the overhead florecent lights but I want the uplights to looks as nice as possible since we spent a good chuck of change on the DJ. Any advice???

  • hmmm, if your space isn't super huge, I've seen it where the ceiling is draped in fabric, almost like a canopy. that should hide some of the overhead lighting and would probably add a little bit of a romantic feel. i'm not sure how much that would cost though, and the logistics of hanging that up might not be the easiest.

did you ask the DJ/uplighting people or the venue contact about how previous people have set up for other parties or weddings? I was concerned about how our pink and green color scheme and uplighting would look on this beigeish orange wall in our ballroom, and the coordinator was able to show me tons of pictures of previous events with uplighting and how it all worked/looked. i know too that uplights can be pointed strategically in different directions/angles which might add more light or change the feel of the room too!

    best of luck! :)
  • Hi and welcome :) I think  you should talk to your DJ, they will porbably know of a good way to mask some of the flourecent lights and how to maximize the look of your uplighting.

    Latterns?

  • this may sound weird, but what about christmas lights? no, not the multicolored ones, but maybe the icicle ones? just an idea Wink
  • Hi and welcome! I agree with PPs about talking with the DJ and lighting company. They'll probably have some ideas or previous experience with it. Maybe you could try lots of candles around the room?

  • I'd turn turn the overhead lights off and incorporate additional lighting along with the uplighting. The uplighting will light the walls, but you could do rope lights under all the tables and centerpieces with lots of candles or submergable led lights.

  • Welcome to the board. I agree with talking to the venue to see what other people have done and talking to your dj about it if they're providing some lighting as well. Hope you figure out a solution.
  • Thanks everyone. There is a string of the clear xmas lights around the room..but I am going to check about adding a lot more and candles.
