Experiences with custom-made dresses

Hello everyone, I am thinking about having someone make my dress, copying different aspects of some designs I like. I have a very tight budget (under 1000) and all the dresses I like are way beyond my reach. I also adore illusion necklines, and they are super hard to find with my budget.
My question is, has anyone done this/knows someone that did it, and what has been your experience. Has the dress turned out pretty close to the original design? Finally, does anyone recommends any specific person/business that does this. I live in Chicago, and I would prefer to have someone I can actually go and meet, I also have family in Florida, so any of these places would work.
Thanks!

  • Thank you for your response! I haven't received any other responses, I know that there probably aren't  many brides that are doing this though. I will look into the local board, thanks :)
  • I had my custom dress made by a seller on Etsy. I absolutely LOVE my dress and it was very very affordable! Only $180! Crazy right? I even sent her pieces of my mother's old wedding dress and veil and she incorprated them into my dress. It's so special and I had a great experience. • Fellow Chicago bride!
I'm getting my dress custom made by an amazing bridal couture designer: Zoya Moda Atelier.
    Here is her website: http://www.zoyamoda.com/

  • I too have a small budget for a wedding dress. What I would like to do is try some on in a bridal salon and then shop for something similar online. I have found many sites where you can get dresses cheaper. Once the dress is ordered, all you have to worry about is alterations, maybe you can get someone local or a friend or family member to do it for you. It'll save a lot on the wedding dress.
  • My dress was custom made, and I love it.
  • mine has just arrived and its perfect! i got it off dressilyme.com and my mums came a few weeks ago from dhgate.com and the only thing with that was we had to sort a few threads out because hers was done by machines i guess. but hers worked out at $90 and mine was just $134! i was really worried they would be rubbish when they came as they were so cheap and as i had them custom to my measurments you cannot return unless theres a fault! but i was not dissapointed! they even changed the neckline from a strapless to a sweetheart too, and there are loads of other sites thats do the neckilne your after too! alls left to do is loose a bit of belly!(lol)and get it altered.good luck, hope you find your perfect dress!

eBay, My dress was made for a seller from eBay from china, $180, it is beautiful, like 2000 dollars, but one thing give them you right measurement and details of the dress, type of material, after I got the wedding dress I ask them to make the bridesmaid dresses now, I will marry next year April, good luck
