Getting legally married in another Country

We thought we had it all figured out today and planned to book tomorrow morning.

All inclusive resort in Mexico - planned to get married there on the beach and enjoy our honeymoon. We just found out we have to be there 3 business days before our wedding in order for it to be legal which doesn't work for us at all.

Is anyone familiar with the legal process of marrying in another Country and if this is a normal requirement or just something this resort requires?

Re: Getting legally married in another Country

  • Okay, after doing more reading on here I think I figured out why the waiting period. I also found out there is a lot of paperwork and blood tests required. Bummer. Looks like we are on to plan b.
  • I think it's very common to have a waiting period in other countries. 3 days doesn't sound bad at all. I know in the UK you have to have been there for 7 days before you can give notice to marry, and then cannot marry until 15 days after you give notice.

Good luck with plan b if that's what you're doing now.
  • In Mexico that's completely normal. What you can do if you love your location and resort, is go to your local court house and get married there before you go and then have a ceremony in Mexico on the beach with your guests. It won't be the legal one but no one has to know the difference. My FI and are doing that, guests will never know as there really isn't a difference btwn the legal and symbolized ceremonies... Good luck!

  • It's definitely a requirement by the country and not just the resort.  In Jamacia, they also have a 3 day residency requirement to be legally married there.  MY FI and I will be there a full 6 days prior to the wedding, so we've got that covered lol!  No blood test requirement there though.

I'm curious as to what you plan b is?  As Jules said, you can always get married legally at home at the courts and have a symbolic ceremony in Mexico!

  • We did a lot of investigaton on this as well. We are planning to get married in Barbados, and there is no waiting period to apply for a legal marriage license :) It will cost us about $400-$500 dollars for the legal license and officiant to perform the ceremony, but we loved that don `t have to wait.

  • I know Mexico is one of the more difficult countries to get married in if you're not a resident, I believe. I agree, you can always go to the courthouse to "make it legal" and then have your "wedding" in Mexico. I think a few other girls have done this.

We picked St. Thomas due to the no waiting period and the fact that it's US :)

As pp said, that's normal for Mexico. You can always do the courthouse thing or find another location that has no waiting period. We stuck with Hawaii for no waiting periods and the fact that we were still in the US. I'm sure you'll figure out something that will work out perfect for your big day!!

  • agree with PP if marrying locally is an option for you guys then the ceromnony in mexico no one will have to even know..hope it all works out for you..good luck
  • That's one of the reasons I am getting married before we leave. For DR it is a similar waiting period (doesn't include arrival date or any weekends) and the cost is about 600 for a judge. Prior to all of that you have to get all of your documents translated as well. They do not have a blood requirement though.

I was really hesitant with the idea at first, mainly because I didn't want a random date to be our official date on paper then another that we would celebrate, etc. but we will go to the courthouse almost exactly one month before which happens to be our 4 year anniversary.
