Mexico Vs. P*nta Cana??

Hi ladies, we are already planning an anniversary trip and we are looking at Mexico or the Dominican Republic (went there for our honeymoon and I HIGHLY recommend it!).  I'm pretty familiar with resorts in the DR, so what I'm wondering about is Mexico.

Where would you recommend going in Mexico?  We will be going with another couple, we are young, fun, definitely want to party but don't want it to be TOO spring breakish.  Not into excursions, more so relaxing by the pool/beach with drinks.  All-inclusive is a must.  Around $2500 for 5 days would be ideal (that's what we paid for the DR for 6 days).

Thanks!

  • I'd highly recommend the Sun Palace in Cancun.  We went last year during school vacation week for 7 days and it was a little cheaper than that.  (resort only-not flights).  It's all inclusive and adults only.  The beach was great.
  • Valentin Imperial Maya was a great place with a huge main pool, large swim up pool/quiet pool and the beach. They have some shows and the pool was very hopping during the day, but it doesn't feel like spring break because they cater more to couples and it's outside of the city.
  • Mexico for sure! Go somewhere new. Plus a new stamp on your passport. :-)

We went to the RIU Palace Riviera Maya. One of the selling features for us was it was walking distance to Playa Del Carmen. About 10 minutes along the beach. So we could go out at night if we wanted.

  • We stayed in Palace Isla Mujeres, and it was amazing! It's a 30 minute ferry ride from Cancun, so you could do the whole Cancun thing during the day if you wanted, and then take the ferry back at night to the relaxing island! The resort is just amazing, and the island is so small. We knew our way around it after the first few days.
Best part: For 7 days/nights, with airfare, rooms, tips, cabs, EVERYTHING, we spent $3100.
  • Secrets Maroma Beach would be my top choice in RM; we HMed there.  Secrets Capri (in Playa del Carmen) is supposed to be very similar, but isn't as expensive.  We had friends HM there that loved it.
We also want to check out the newly opened Secret on the Vines in Cancun.  With the location I wonder if this would be more SB-type though.  BUt it is brandnew and last I saw, they were running some good promos!

I leave for Secrets the Vine a week from tomorrow on my HM!  While I can't speak for the surrounding area, the resort itself seems the opposite of springbreak-ish.  I agree with the Secrets resort recommendation though. . . . . when we booked a few weeks ago they were having crazy deals with free nights and whatnot.  Certainly worth looking into!!!!
  • you'll only have to worry about spring breakish during spring break :)
riviera maya, cancun, cozumel, isla mujeres are all popular.
have you been to tripadvisor.com? pretty much every AI is drinks and pool/beach but the other amenities set each apart-like top shelf liquor vs low, specialty restaurants needs for reservations or not, what type of room etc....
when do you want to go?

We will be going mid-June.  Top shelf vs bottom shelf liquor doesn't bother me.  I pretty much drank rum drinks on my HM in P*nta Cana and was fine with variations of that.  Our resort had many restaurants that needed a reservation and I didn't like that because you had to wake up at 7am to get one...I'm not picky about food at all either.  I'm the most interested in how nice the grounds/beach/scenary is and the atmosphere of the hotel.  Like I said I want it to be fun, not totally boring and quiet.  In the DR they had an animation team and they did contests and stuff throughout the day and it was fun watching people make an a$$ of themself haha.

  • At the Valentin there are no reservations and no limitations on the amount of restaurants you can go to. Some AIs will have 7 restaurants, but you only get to eat a la carte three times or so. VIM also had no bracelet. We went for our honeymoon in May. We stayed a week in an Emerald ocean view suite and total with flights from Portland Maine was $2650. But I also booked on travelocity using a $50 off coupon, and I booked through ebates.com and got a check in the mail after we came back for around $70.

We will leave from CT or NYC so I'm good with that price!  I like that there are no reservations.  What is there to do during the day/night around the hotel?  Is there a club?  Do people goto a certain bar at night/is there a nightly show?  How far from cancun?  I don't *think* we'll goto  Thank you for your input!!  This hotel is our top contender right now.
