Azulik - Tulum, Riviera Maya, Mexico

Anyone every been to the Azulik resort?  FI and I were doing a lot of internet research about the Mayan Riviera area in Mexico and happened to find a recommendation for it.  It seems like a pretty interesting resort.  Any knotties out there able to give me a first hand review?

  • Check on www.tripadvisor.com - there should be reviews from people that have actually stayed there.

  • I haven't heard anything about that resort, but my FI and his family have gone to Barcelo in the Riviera Maya for the past 4 years and I went for the first time this past summer and it was INCREDIBLE.  We are having a hard time finding a honeymoon spot because we can't find a place that compares (and we're already going back 3 months before our honeymoon...not that I would complain about going twice in one year!).

  • I'm sorry I haven't heard of the resort that you are talking about, but my fiance and I just booked our hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. We are staying at the Playacar Palace. It's a really nice place you should look into it! :)
  • I've been to this resort, for my father's wedding three years ago. I really loved it, but it might not be for everyone.
You will get a free-standing, thatch-roof bungalow with options for what kind of view you'd want. I personally would pay more for the ocean view -- the jungle view rooms would be very stuffy as there is no AC in any of the bungalows.
Overall, very romantic, but very rustic. The water in the showers is brackish (some salt content) and the area kills the power generators every night around 11. There will be a mosquito net around your bed, and you will need to use it.
Again, I loved it and embraced the rustic feeling and relaxed attitude of the resort. The spa is great -- I had an open-air massage right on the beach. Food was very good, but the service was always at a snail's pace. Nobody is in a hurry.
But it is a much different experience from the giant all-inclusive resorts. If you want to party and have your days packed with activities, this is not the resort for you. If you want to wear nothing but a swimsuit (or less), walk barefoot all the time, and totally forget the world, I say do it! I would go back in a heartbeat, but my FI would not be into this type of vacation.
