Tipping!

Hello -

We are getting married in S.FLA at a 5 Star Resort & Spa.

I am paying off the balances for the hoel and catering right now.....

The caterers added in an additional 20 % gratutiy and the Resort & Spa added in an additional 22% gratutity.  The caterers have four servers.  The Resort & Spa are setting up and breaking down - bar tender......

Ultimately the caterers gratutiy was billed at $800.
The Resort & Spa at $600.

Do I need to tip additional.  I was shocked that it was added in; however, I do understand why.

I typically always tip 20% ---- -the resort billed 22%  ------ I can't imagine going over.

Thanks,
Eva

Re: Tipping!

  • If gratuity is already added in like this, you are under no obligation to tip more. Our venue adds 20 percent as well, and we do not plan to give an additional tip unless they really go above and beyond the day of the wedding.
  • I agree with PP, if they have already added in the gratuity then you are under no obligation to tip more unless you and FI (or who ever is paying) feel that the service was exceptional.

  • Is it gratuity or is it a "service charge"? The  service charge is what you pay to have staff at all, many places don't bundle that cost into the price of catering, etc. If it is a "service charge", I would think that a small gratuity is expected. I, personally, would do that gratuity as cash directly to the servers at the end of the night.
