NWR: Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

Yup, I heard about it as breaking news when I was laying in bed watching tv last night. It is pretty scary, but just glad I don't live anywhere near that area. I think over half of the animals have been shot and killed. It is really sad, but if that is the measures they have to take to keep the public safe, then I guess that is what it is.

It sounds like something out of a movie! I would be terrified if I lived in that area.

haha!  Yes I heard this last night and it actually made the Today show this morning.  I actually lived out there for 7 years and still work in the area.  I am so glad that I don't have to drive into the office today!  I'm waiting to see if my co-workers, especially one that lives less than a mile from the house shows up.

    Goodness.
I do have to say, it ticks me off that they were shooting to kill. It aggravates me, a lot.
Thankfully Jack Hanna stepped in. I am hoping they at least tranquilize the animals and go from there whether putting them in the zoo or in Wilds.
I really hope whoever murdered the man and set the animals free is happy. Because now most of them are dead. Bastard.

The last I heard is that the man committed suicide and they are speculating that he set them loose first.  They cancelled/delayed shools out there so I am glad the kiddies are not standing around at bus stops.

I heard this too. It is sad that they had to kill the animals but even Jack Hanna was quoted as saying it would be more tragic for humans to be dying from these animals. This isn't something that happens often so its probably the first response until trained professionals from the zoo had time to step in.

FI was driving through Zanesville on his way home from Pittsburgh when this started yesterday.  He didn't see anything though.

So tragic and so scary.  My guess is an extreme animal rights group liberated the animals and then killed the owner.  I have nothing against animal rights groups, but some are more extreme than others and it wouldn't surprise me, especially if there were suspicions of this guy abusing the animals.

Hopefully what they were saying on the Today show is true and this will lead to greater legislation for exotic animal ownership.

I heard about it this morning! How sad in so many ways :( I feel so bad for the animals... I really hate they had to kill them, but I totally understand why. Jack Hannah said on the news that they couldn't tranquilize them last night because the animal would run after being hit, and it would be hard to find where they went in the dark & rain. I also heard the owner shot himself... but that's just rumor right now I think. I always hate to hear about animals having to die when they didn't do a darn thing wrong. Yes, they are aggressive and yes I totally agree that public safety is more imporant, but it's still sad. I just hope nobody is hurt and the rest of the animals are safely caught and taken somewhere they can be cared for.

I listened to the live newsbroadcast at 10am and they did say that the man opened the animals cages then shot himself.  They also said that they planned to tranquilize the rest of the animals once they are found and that the reason they didn't do that last night was because it would be too risky to try to do it in the dark and in the rain.  They said that one of the cats was hit and killed on the interstate!! Yikes!

I grew up about a mile from this "animal sanctuary," and my parents still live there.  They said they heard shot after shot after shot last night, and the entire situation makes my stomach hurt.

At the risk of sounding like a tree-loving hippie, I don't take much stake in what Jack Hanna says.  It is a well-known fact that organizations hire this guy to put a good PR spin on controversial situations (an orca killing a trainer at Sea World, anyone?) so his opinion means little to me.

I do not think that human lives should be risked in order to save the lives of animals, but I should still be allowed to feel sad for the animals who lost their lives due to the actions of a stupid human being.  A lot of the people I went to school with (admittedly hillbillies) are trying to make me feel guilty about that fact.  *sigh

    eye to eye...

the first thing I heard on the news was "shoot to kill" and my stomach dropped.  I do get it but a lot of people are redneck and see this as a free pass to go out shooting animals to get rid of them.  Can I tell you how many dogs I have rescued that have been shot, been shot at, abused, etc.  Ohio's animal laws suck.

And since I am on my soap box they have MORE rules and regulations on PIT BULLS than freaking LIONS, TIGERS, and BEARS...oh my.

Jenny, Ohio has some of the worst animal laws on the books.  It is awful that it takes a tragedy before we suddenly decide it is time to do something.  (Of course our "do something" will only mean stricter laws for for exotic animals...not re-evaluating our overall stance on animal cruelty and ownership Frown)

I am disgusted by this situation as well. I totally get the need to protect human life, but the bottom line is that this guy had a record of animal cruelty and abuse and should not have been allowed to own any animals, let alone exotic ones.

I too was disappointed by Jack Hanna's comments on GMA about the new legislation (glad your committee has been meeting since Kasich took office, now how about DOING SOMETHING!) He said there would be a licensing process, but I have no faith that it will do anything to protect exotic animals.

No private citizen has any business owning exotic or endangered animals, especially dangerous ones. Period.

This is coming from a Missourian though, and our animal protection laws are a freaking joke. We passed a puppy mill cruelty prevention law last year, as in voted on by the public, only to have it later watered-down by the Missouri legislature.
