Alternatives to a suit for ring bearer?

My ring bearer (if we can talk him in to it) will be my 5 year old nephew. He is very picky when it comes to clothing and I know we won't be able to wrestle him into a suit (I want something a bit more casual anyway). I'm looking for some other ideas for his outfit...I think knicker suits are adorable but I don't think we'll be able to get him to wear the socks and I know there's no chance in hell he'll wear a flat cap. What have you all done for ring bearer outfits? I could also use some ideas for an alternative to the ring pillow; I loathe them. Not a huge fan of having him carry a teddy bear/toy car/toy of any kind either, and that seems to be all I can find when searching for ideas.
Any help is appreciated!!

LOVE the idea of shorts. Hopefully you can find something that you like.
  • The shorts would be cute.  Depending how casual you could also go with kaki (sp?) shorts.  You could also always let him walk with his sister in whatever he decided to wear that day.

Would he hold his sister's hand?  That could be cute.  I don't really see why he would have to hold anything.

  • It's in August and he's old enough for school, so maybe something that he would wear for school pictures? That's what I'm doing for our two little dudes. They're going to be in navy pants and a gray dress shirt with no collar and therefore no tie. We told their parents what colours they should have and they both came up with virtually the same idea and they will be able to wear the get-up for school pictures and other not-so-formal events.

  • Thanks for your input everyone! He will hold his sister's hand for sure, that'll be the only way he'll do it. Maybe I will just forgo having him carry anything at all...
  • I love RB in a vest & tie - if he'll go for either. I've seen "suit sets" for little guys with the dress pants, shirt, vest & tie - esp. now with Easter around the corner. If you want to go with shorts, you can always buy the pants & get them hemmed into shorts.

I've seen the RB walk down the aisle with a sign that says "Here comes the bride". When the ceremony is over, turn the sign around to say "Just Married". I can't find the pic, but the sign was on a satin ribbon & he wore it around his neck. You could also have him carry it. It gives him something to do without the pillow!
