Sunset Wedding...location for Maui and Oahu

I’m newly engaged and we’re looking at possibly getting married on the beach during a sunset ceremony in October 2012. We’ve been to Oahu once and Kaanapali once. I would say that I found  the sunsets in Maui prettier than Oahu, but like that Oahu as it’s abit cheaper to fly into.  Photography is really important to me as it’s the only opportunity to really capture that moment so I need to make sure I picked the right location. We won’t be able to go on a scouting trip before the wedding so hopefully all you brides and brides-to-be will be able to help me out here.  -What is the best location for a small (around 14 ppl include myself and my Fiance) sunset wedding in Oahu or Maui. Thanks a lot ladies! Looking forward to hearing from all of you. Please freel free to PM if needed.

For a small wedding like that, I would suggest Merriman's in Kapalua on Maui. I'm sure you'll get great sunset views because I believe the restaurant is elevated on cliff!

But what kind of venue are you looking for? One with everything provided? Hotel? Restaurant?

We are getting married at Olowalu, but you have to bring everything in. The nice thing is that it's private and oceanfront facing the west. Great for those sunset shots!

    Also, I sent you a PM. :)

I would definitely go with Maui, any beach or venue on the west side of the island (from Wailea to Kaanapali and north) will have an amazing sunset!  Since you have such a small group going I think it's worth it to pay for the hop flights from Honolulu to Maui.  There are just so many gorgeous and more secluded spots on Maui, you can't go wrong!

Thanks everyone! I think because our wedding is going to be on so small, we're looking at focusing on just making sure the ceremony location is perfect. We will most likely just take everyone out to dinner after at some restaurant or a luau. We're planning to come back home (I'm from Vancouver, Canada) to have a bigger reception with the rest of our friends and family.

I was thinking if I can get away with doing all this without a wedding coordinator. Not sure if that will work!?

I recommend Gannon's in Wailea. It's on a golf course, and you can get married on the cliffside overlooking the ocean. Then they feed you... they are an amazing restaurant, good food. Price is per person. Don't use their coordinator, it's not necessary.

If it's that small, you can go do a beach wedding (won't be private) and then go to the Old Lahaina Luau after the ceremony. The sunset from there is amazing.

For a small wedding like that, a coordinator isn't necessary. Just do you research to make sure you have all the details down (especially for your marriage license). I think for public beaches you have to get a permit if you decide to go that route...

Hi, Im from Vancouver too!! We faced the same dilema as yours as we thought Oahu was much more affordable than Maui in terms of flights and accomodation. But after months of research and hunting deals, we found that flights are actually not that expensive if you wait for a seat sale. Air Canada just had a deal for $430 direct return including tax for the week we are getting married! And many of the hotels will offer you deals without signing a contract for a minimum amount of rooms. Message me if you have any more questions, so exciting there's another Vancouver bride on the board yay!
