Need advice on a contract

I have heard great things about Brian Childs as a DJ, but when I got his contract and almost sent it back, I re-read one statement that made me very nervous. It reads "If Brian Childs cannot attend, a DJ of equal talent will replace him". That scared me to death! Is this like a standard sentence in all DJ contracts? Has anyone had this happen? This is obviously my first time planning a wedding or event of this size, so please forgive my ignorance :)

It's fairly standard.  Just keep in mind that there are crazy things that can happen like (heaven forbid) a car accident or illness where he might have to miss.  I talked with Brian for a while at a friends wedding and he was very much on the up and up.  If it bothers you still, just talk to him about it.  I don't think he would ruin his reputation over anything silly.

Yeah, he probably has to put it in there to protect himself. I have never heard anyone on this board say one bad thing about him.... and I am using him in May...so I'll let you know how it goes :)

Ditto ppl, almost every contract I have has a "life or death" clause in there in case they can't make it.

This was in his contract and is standard- this protects him in case anything would happen. I wouldnt worry about it.

My DJ contract also has that line in it. Stuff happens, so they have to say it just in case.

I see that as protection for YOU.  If he were to become ill or have a family emergency, he would ensure that YOU aren't stuck without a DJ.   I might ask whether he has ever had to send a sub... which is a nice way of asking whether he double-books and uses subs routinely.   You could negotiate that if a sub is required, that your bill is reduced ~ if you're worried about him double-booking.
