Buttercreme vs fondant and prices

pic of cake attached this is what cake baker said. so trying to decide bet the two btw never had fondant. so dont know what that will taste like.
we can make a 3 or a 4
tier wedding cake.  As pictured with the painting on fondant, it would
be $700 for the 3 tier and $860 for the 4 tier.  We could also make it
similarly with fondant appliques of the birds and flowers and piping
of the lines on buttercream.  The buttercream cake would be $560 for
the 3 tier and $660 for the 4 tier.  A silver cake stand is an
additional $25 rental.

    Ultimately it's your decision.  Fondant has a more smooth and professional looking finish.  Personally I think it tastes gross, like eating a sugary paste.  You would also want to think if your wedding is inside or outside. Fondant holds up better to extreme temperatures. 

    I'm baking my brother and FSIL's wedding cake in September, and we're doing buttercream frosting with fondant overtop.  The fondant because she wants raffia ribbon bows and real sunflowers, as well as a smooth appearance.

    FYI: Fondant costs more because it takes a lot more to make, more effort to roll and work with as well.

    For that design I would do fondant, I love the look of hand painted cakes. Personally I dont like fondant but for those with a sweet tooth tend to like it. Fondant tends to be a love or hate thing. Also think about your venue if it will be hot (ex outside) or a warm room I would do fondant as it acts like a insulator and will keep the buttercream underneath from melting (as fast)

    Your baker should let you taste fondant. If not, go to bakeries that sell cake by the slice and taste some. I don't like fondant. If you find you like the taste, go with what looks prettier, if you can afford the fondant. Prettier likely will be the fondant.

    I hate fondant and personallly don't think paying extra for something that people will pull off is worth the extra money.

    I vote buttercream.

    A good baker can make buttercream just as smooth as fondant.  I have no idea how fondant got so popular. I did fondant and I regret it because buttercream would have been so much cheaper. Our cake still tasted great so I can't complain about that but fondant is just unnecessary for most cake designs and it costs more!

    I like the way butter cream tastes.  But fondant is prettier for the desing/painting you chose.  So it is sort of a toss up.  GL with your decision!

    Even if it looks FABULOUS... people are definately going to remem ber and talk about the gross taste. Use buttercream unless you want to see lots of expensive PRETTY cake in The trash
