  Do hotels charge a fee to set up a block?  I got married where there was a hotel attached, so that was part of my deal, and that's my only experience with it.
  
  Are you getting married in an area with a lot of hotels?  If there is little chance that all the hotels in the area would book up, then I would't do it.  If you're getting married in a touristy area few hotels, I would try to figure something out or encourage your guests to book super early.

  I booked a block of rooms at the Senator in Augusta for our October 2012 wedding and we didn't have to pay a dime! Not sure if that is typical or not... but I was quite pleased to hear that we didn't have to have any financial obligation at all. Good luck!

  Thanks for the advice.  Some hotels do charge a deposit, or require you to pay for rooms not filled.  I haven't done much investigating yet, but I was wondering if it was worth the effort, which is why I thought I would post on here.
  
  I'm getting married in Old Orchard Beach on 09/08/12, but I am encouraging guests to stay in Portland or maybe even Boston so that there is more in the area that they can enjoy (we have many guests travelling from CA).  I was thinking of just telling guests to book early because Maine is vacationland, and then maybe recommend a few hotels, but I want to avoid being tacky.

  There is a really nice Holiday Inn that's fairly new in Saco.  That's not too far from OOB and seems to me they have quite a few rooms.  You might want to try them. Also, there are some very nice B&B's in that area.  The Billows House is one I have stayed in and it's right on the beach.  Not sure if that is their off-season, but that would be another place to check out.

  FI and I set up the room block for FSIL and there was no fee or minimum of rooms, they actually gave way more than expected ust in case- even in August in Maine. 

  
  

  As far as OOB, I definitely reccommend the Holiday Inn in Portland. That's where my best friend got rooms for her OOB wedding and we got ready there. They were so helpful and even let me check in hours early so I could put my stuff in my room before the wedding.

  Just so you know there are quite a few hotels in Portland, ME that don't have the space any longer for room blocks!!  I have called a ton LOL!!!  But Portland definitely has a lot of nice hotels and so long as you call none of them charge you for a room block and give you a cut off date when the discount/room block will be over...typically a month before your wedding!!!

  I have booked a block of rooms at the Comfort Inn and Suites in Scarborough!  $117.00 a night in July!  The Hampton Inn and Ramada(was Holiday Inn) were more expensive.  Hope this helps!
