Battle for the Honeymoon

HELP!! I am so torn between two different honeymoons! We are looking at Sandals Ocho Rios. 6 night stay in a villa with a butler :)  Personally I would love this.

BUT my fiance wants to do something different and adventurous. Fly into Washington DC, and experiece history and all it's offerings for a few days. After that, drive down into Shenandoah Vallery and hit wineries, Bed and Breakfasts, etc. Need advice! What would you do?!

I am just afraid that I will get bored in Jamaica....

Re: Battle for the Honeymoon

  • I think a lot would depend on what time of year you are planning on taking your honeymoon.  I think you also need to evalute how much you want to be around other people on your honeymoon.  Don't forget that your meals won't be included in your price for the DC trip so that is something you will have to budget extra for.  I think DC has the potential to be a great trip, but I don't think I would consider it for a honeymoon; to each their own.

With the Sandals trip, you can visit the other Sandals resorts on Jamaica so that would give you a bit of a variety in terms of activities.
  • We would be on our honeymoon April 10-April 16. Both have something different to offer.
  • Well I can give you my thoughts but it really is going to come down to a personal decision.  I have visited Jamaica and do not care for it at all.  We have done an AI before but in Mexico but not Jamaica (a Secrets Resort) and it was my experience that almost everyone at the resort was celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary (we were there for my birthday).  I was told by friends that have done Sandals that they felt it was the same way-they just felt like one of the crowd with everyone there for the same reason.

I live outside of DC and if you enjoy history it is a wonderful city to visit.  You'll find some great hotels downtown (we like Kimpton properties). We did the VA wine region for our 2nd anniversary and stayed at a lovely inn, L'Auberge Provencale. We had a fantastic time and are going to the same inn again in December for a quick little getaway.  So my personal preference btw those 2 choices would be DC (if I didn't live here) though I must admit I did a Caribbean honeymoon so that would be my choice if the option was another island destination Smile

  • I think a honeymoon can easily be either trip - it's about a mindset, not location. But, I love the idea of doing a middle route - maybe travelling around wineries for 3 days and then staying at a resort for three days...

  • I would choose the DC area.  We went there in April and loved it!  We live in Florida minutes from the beach so we don't personally find beachy locations that romantic.  Contrary to what the pp said, ANY trip can be romantic if you have the right attitude :).  Also, in my personal experience, B&B's are almost always more romantic anyway. because they're smaller and more quaint.

  • I think a compromise would be much better, there's obviously wonderful stuff in CA, San Francisco maybe. Or maybe Boston/Martha's Vineyard, although I guess that's a bit cold. How about New Orleans?
