Hors d'oeuvres Help!

I am going to my tasting on the 5th of August but they will only have 3 appetizers to try. I have choices that consist of:

Italian Meatballs - Available to try
Fresh fruit
Mini panini - Available to try
Chicken Satay
Assorted pinwheels - Available to try
Cheese and cracker
Tuscan stuffed mushrooms

I have to pick 3.

I know for sure I want to do Italian meatballs and Tuscan stuffed mushrooms but I'm not sure which other one to pick? This is so hard! Any suggestions??

For some reason I think because those 2 will be hot doing something like fruit or cheese and crackers will not look as good.

  • I'm sure they'll make the cheese and cracker presentation lovely, if that's what you're worried about. I find that cheese, at least in my circles, is never turned down.
  • I would try the chicken satay.  It's very easy to mess that one up with poor quality meat.

  • Chicken satay. I wouldn't waste a tasting on cheese & crackers or the fresh fruit platter but that is always a good option to have

  • OP, if I understand your post, you can't try anything but the 3 you indicated, right?  That's weird.  I'd feel pretty uncomfortable serving my guests something I never tried - there were a couple hor d'oeuvres that I was sure I wanted, but once I tried them I changed my mind.  I'd ask if maybe you can pay a small fee for them to prepare other appetizers you want to taste test.  If they can't do that, I'd just got with the cheese tray - everyone likes cheese, and you can't really mess it up!  Plus, you tend to get more for your money with a cheese tray, in my experience.

  • I guess I would choose the fruit for a nice variety of options.  Not everyone wants heavier appetizers right before a meal.  Just my thoughts...

  • Agree with PP.  I'd go with the cheese or fruit.   Cheese is almost always a good option.
  • Wait, are we talking about what you're sampling or what you're actually serving your guests?  I agree it'd be nice to serve cheese and fruit, but it's not worth wasting a sample on.

Are the stuffed mushrooms vegetarian?  If they are not, then you may want to make sure your remaining appitizer is vegetarian.

  • I'd go for the fresh fruit.
  • I can only try the paninis, pinwheels, and italian meatballs.

I want to do the Italian Meatballs for sure and than the Tuscan stuffed mushrooms sound amazing but we can't try them. They have an open house everyth month of a select variety of foods they serve to try. I don't have a problem with that at all but if I choose to use the mushrooms and meatballs I am no sure what else to serve with it since I have to pick 3. Should I completely nix that and just go with something else? I am so confused at this point since I won't be able to try everything I want!
  • I'd try the 3 you can try, but unless you fall in love with one, do cheese or fruit for the third.  You pretty much know what those will taste like (plus they're vegetarian!)

  • Count yourself lucky on getting to try and tast food! I was told by my vendor that come July, we would be called for an appt to pick out our centerpieces, chair sashes and to sample food. Well at the end of June, my Mom started calling to see what days they were doing appointments because of our work schedules, in case she might need to take off a couple of hours..well, she was told FINALLY after many times of trying to talk to the lady that there would be no food tasting! We have been there for different receptions and have had SOME of their food but now we have to just pick...the lady told her they do not make up all the menu just for tasting! Talk about pissed off! My Mom was livid! So we are just going to pick out what we THINK will be alright and hope for the best..as for apps, Mom is ordering 3 different ones, the fruit, cheese and cracker platter, pigs n a blanket and swedish meatballs, we have to think of the kids that will be there too..
