BM Dress Vent

So I finally went bridesmaids dress shopping with 3 out of the 5 girls.  One girl already bought hers, and one couldn't make it.

I told them they could get any dress they wanted as long as it was blue and short.  Easy, right?

Well, I think they tried on every dress in the store that came in that color, and they didn't love any of them.  Most of them they hated, and they only "kind of" liked one each.  They definitely didn't like it enough to buy it.

I'm a little frustrated because I was hoping that they would be able to find at least one out of the 20+ dresses that they really liked.  On the other hand, I know that all of them have body image issues, which makes it much more difficult for them to find something they like.  Which is why I wanted to let them get any sort of fabric or style so that they would feel comfortable.

I told them that I could tell that they didn't really like any of them, and I gave them the fabric swatch of the color so that they could look for something they liked on their own.  I'm hoping that this will relieve some of the pressure, but I'm still worried that they won't be able to find anything.

Any advice?

Re: BM Dress Vent

  • Have you tried David's Bridal? I can't imagine that they wouldn't be able to find at least one style there that they didn't like. I would just pick out a dress that you think is flattering and within their price range for them. Otherwise you could be a month out and they still may not have anything picked out. I am super indecisive and would rather a bride tell me what to wear then leave it up to me to pick.

  • I think that giving them the swatch to look on their own was a great idea! Although it sucks that they didn't like any of the dresses in the store, at least this way they can find something in the color that you want.

I think the only other thing I would do is give them a date to have their dresses by so that they aren't looking at the last minute. What store did you go to by the way? I used Alfred Angelo and they have a great variety of styles! If you need help looking for dresses, though, let me know!

I agree with this! That way they could have several options and can still keep with the same color!
  • We went to David's.  I thought that would be easiest because there are so many different styles! Alas, no luck.   We tried to pop into House of Brides, but they weren't taking walk-ins.

I'll have to check out Alfred Angelo's.  Hopefully someplace nearby carries them.

Melissa- I'm super indecisive too!  I don't want to pick anything for them, especially now seeing just how much they hate a lot of dresses, even ones I thought looked good on them.  I don't want them to be uncomfortable, and I'm afraid I'd pick something they hate, but they would just suck it up and wear it.  I would feel  horrible.   Also, I like the look of different styles.  I prefer that over matching dresses.

  • Alfred Angelo is carried at a lot of stores and they have signature stores of their own, but they're a little limited. Check their website for both types of stores.
  • I would just pick a dress for each of them and this point and tell them to order it
  • What color are you having them wear?

I agree with all of this.  If you can, I'd maybe go to one more store with them and then let them look on their own.  Do you know what body issues each of them has?  Is it one particular part of their body or just their body as a whole?  Do you think they have more issues shopping with your other BMs more than they would in private?

  • Good points MM.  Since everyone's so busy, it was hard to come up with a date for everyone to get together to make the trip.   We live in a small rural community, and it's an hour+ to the bigger bridal stores.  For one of them, my sister, she just had 2 kids back to back, and she is still losing weight from that, and she wants to lose more weight.  I'm not too worried about her though, I think she'll figure something out soon.

The other two are sisters (to each other, not me).  They go shopping together all the time.  For them it is an overall body issue, I think.  I could tell they were a bit frustrated, and I worry that they won't find anything that makes them feel good.

I think going with them to one more store is a good idea, to show my support.  If they don't find anything then, I will just give them a date to have one ordered by and hopefully they will have better luck on their own.
