Farmer's tan

Hello Ladies!  As an Oregonian just emerging from 6 months of no sun, I have uniformly lily white skin.  Now the sun has begun to peer out from behind the clouds and I'm starting to worry about developing a farmer's tan before the wedding, because my dress shows much more skin than my every day clothes.

What are you ladies doing to avoid a farmer's tan?

Re: Farmer's tan

  • I am staying out of he sun (I dont want cancer) and maybe getting a spray tan.

  • I'm staying out of the sun as well, but I'm not often exposed for more than 10 minutes anyway and I barely tan.

If I'm going to be out for longer amounts of time I use lots of sunblock.

  • I'll admit it, I'm going tanning in a tanning salon.  I'm very fair now but I don't burn, I tan easily, so I'm going to start on Saturday and go for two months, but not very often, only a couple times a week.  I don't like how spray tanning looks on me and I want to have a good tan down before I go to the Bahamas for our honeymoon.

I know its bad for you lalalala but I don't do it often and I think doing it in moderation is key.  Plus I'm Italian and having some Mediterranean in you can lower your risk of skin cancer.  Annnd of course the fact that I can be a little shallow when it comes to the wedding and I want to be tan!

Not that I need a tan (I'm black if you can't tell from my "pic" haha), but I now a few people who have used the Jergens lotion with the gradual tan in them.  Would that work for you?
  • I live in texas and already have a bikini tan line. I'm hoping i can get rid of it without having to go tanning but i might have to at the last minute if i can't get rid of it.

I have used that stuff and the MaryKay stuff and both work really well... but very gradually (so you dont get streaky)... if you want to go that route, I would start using it a month before the wedding.

I'm staying out of the sun and wearing sunscreen for the most part. When I am outside, I plan on still wearing sunscreen (obviously), but also wearing clothes that won't give me bad tan lines.
  • I've used the Jergens for little things but I don't think it gives me as even or as deep of a color as actual tanning.  I also can't stand the smell, even with the new formula, there's just something lingering under the surface of the nice smell that makes me feel gross all day.

I'm just going to do what I normally do; use lots of sunscreen and wear clothes that don't give me horrible tan lines.

I would be too worried to use the body self tanner or spray tanning, I would worry that it would stain my dress. It porbably wouldn't, but I'd be too worried to try it.

I have been looking for a sunless face tanner, and can't seem to find any anymore, any suggestions
  • I've heard such horror stories (orange skin, streaks) about the home self-tanning products that I've been afraid to try them.  Those of you that have tried these, if I give it a go a month beforehand and have a disaster, will it be fully faded in time for the wedding?
  • Lol well I live in Vancouver Canada and the sun rarely shines here, so I don;t think there is much risk of me getting one anytime soon!  Once I get to Maui though I will only be wearing strapless bathing suits to avoid the dreaded tan lines.

You wont have a disaster... its seriously so gradual that you cant screw it up. Its not like the spray tanning products or old lotion products that tint your skin with one application. If you are really worried about it, buy a bottle and put a tiny circle of it on your thigh or something to see what one application does.... I bet you will hardly see the spot.

I think jergens has one that you can use on your face. Otherwise I have used the regular jergens and mary kay on my face and had good results. Less is more!

Thank you. If I can't find the face one, I will try the body one with small amounts :)
  • I'm allergic to the sunless tanner, I break out in hives. Its not cute.

I clicked "tanning in my yard" before noticing it said nude... I should learn to read.

  • Hey OP no worries, I'm in Oregon too and I see no sun except for weekends ;)

Bimart has all their summer tan products out right now, and they do have a Jergens in a few different skin tones. I use this for my legs in the winter (it moisturizes nicely, too). I apply quickly and have never seen a streak.

There is also one by banana boat (I think thats the name, I never buy it), thats right next to the Jergens in a dark brown tube... don't get that one! My friend used it and not only had streaks (she was careful about it, too), but she washed her hands afterwards and she still had orange hands... think oompa loompa.

I'm going to Bend for memorial weekend and plan to either wear strapless shirts or very thin straps and cover the rest in Jergens. Also use sunscreen too, it'll help. I've never been in a tanning bed, but I plan to for the wedding - we're going to Hawaii for our HM and I don't want to burn, I need a soft base.

  • I'm a runner and always have used sunscreen and even more now that I'm running outside and it's HOT!  So lots of sunscreen!

I will be visiting a tanning salon and sitting out in my backyard (not nude lol). I've always been a sun worshipper and I will continue to do so because I think nothing looks better in a white dress than a tan lol! FSIL/MOH take every opportunity possible to sit out in the sun... its usually our weekend festivites.

ETA: FI will also be going to a tanning salon because he is a landscaper and there is just no avoiding the sun for him... luckily his tux will cover his crazy farmers tan but he refuses to take his hat of at work so hopefully the tanning bed with help even those out for him.
  • sunscreen and i'm definitely going to the beach but i've been wearing bandau tops for the past year in preparation lol
  • I had my dress custom made to match my swimsuit back--no tan lines for me!
  • I have recess duty outside 5 days a week so my lower arms are darker than my shoulders. I've been pulling my sleeves up to my shoulders. I'll use some gradual self tanner next month.
  • I'm only in the sun during the weekends and I plan on laying by the pool when I get a chance! I'll be wearing a bath suit with no straps so I don't have tan lines.

Same, no skin cancer for me, I am looking into the spray tan option even though I have never done it before.

Some (not much) tanning in my backyard but not nude.  I'll have bottoms on and my top but the straps will be off.  Really, this is weather and work schedule dependent.

I'll also likely use Jergens since that stuff is great and really moisturizes my skin.

  • I live in Pensacola (near one of the most beautiful beaches in the US) and I intentionally bought a swimsuit so I could undo the halter strap for sunning the front of me and undue the back strap for the back while still being appropriate for public. Yes, I do use sunscreen thought.
