Is it appropriate to give a shower hostess a homemade gift?

Two of my aunts are hosting a bridal shower for me next weekend. I've been toying with ideas of what to give them for their generosity and I'm at a loss. I know the rule is to "shop like it's their birthday", but TBH, even if I was really shopping for their bday, I would be in the same predicament.

My original thought was a nice potted flower for each of them, but I don't know... I guess I just feel like it may be cliche and that it's what people get each other when they don't know what else to get (which pretty sum up my situation.. hah).

So I got to thinking some more, and thought about making some yummy treats and placing them in a nice box for each them. I feel it's more personal (and useful) than a potted plant, but I wanted to check to see if there's any kind of etiquette surrounding hostess gifts being homemade. Thoughts?

  • I think that sounds lovely.

  • Personally, if I was hosting and someone brought me a box of homemade cookies, I would appreciate it far more than flowers or soap!
  • I would love homemade treats! I think edible gifts/favors usually go over well.
  • I agree, that idea sounds nice.
  • Thanks for the input ladies, looks like I'll be baking next Friday evening :)

  • That sounds nice! I gave my hostess "Breakfast in a Basket" a little basket with a kitchen towel lining it then i added homemade zuchinni bread and a little jar with homemade honey butter, a spreader and a little bag of coffee (could do tea or hot coco for non coffee drinkers).  the idea being that the day after she put all that work into my shower she doesn't have to worry about what is for breakfast.

not to brag, but it came out really cute.  I wrapped the zuchinni bread in parchment paper and tied it up with kitchen twine. The honey butter was really easy too (1 stick sofened butter + 1tbs honey...then whip 'til well mixed)

  • I think you can brag.  It sounds both adorable and thoughtful.
  • I think it cost me less than $15 total and since spreaders and kitchen towels usually come in multi packs it would be really easy to double the butter and zuchini bread recipes and give a basket to each of your aunts.

  • Kim, that sounds like an amazing hostess gift! I'm thinking of making my homemade fudge as hostess gifts for my shower in June.
