Europe..Germany or Switzerland

We are looking for somewhere in Europe, somewhere with old century style architecture, romantic and not too many crowds. Maybe some castles and beautiful scenery. We have heard good things about Switzerland and Bavaria, Germany.. any thoughts on these?

Re: Europe..Germany or Switzerland

  • around 8,000 including airfare...yeah we were thinking of a smaller town in Bavaria, Germany maybe?
  • I've spent time in both and in the same trip! I stayed in Mittenwald, a small village in Bavaria. Another popular place to stay in Garmisch or Fussen to be near Neuschwanstein Castle. In Switzerland, we stayed in Zurich, Interlaken, and Lucerne. Lucerne was my favorite because it was a small city, so ease of getting around was a plus but not quite as crowded. Zurich was certainly nice, but definitely a lot more busy and crowded. Interlaken was a great jumping off point to visit many small Alp villages. We visited Grindelwald. Overall, my favorite is Switzerland, but to see the best castles, you are better off staying in Germany.

    We stayed:
    Mittenwald: Post Hotel
    Zurich: Baur au Lac
    Interlaken: Victoria Jungfrau
    Lucerne: Palace Luzern

  • Thanks so much! That is a huge help,- may I ask why you liked Switzerlant better? (Just curious) and also how much was your stay in Germany and how much in Switzerland?

I 2nd the Rhine river cruise idea. I didn't cruise it, but the Rhine river area was gorgeous and the towns were so quaint! Definitely romantic!
    Vacation
  • It's hard to say how much the stay was in total since we used miles to fly first class and we did European Delivery on a car, so I didn't have any car or train costs. But, I think the hotel in Mittenwald was around 120 Euros/night. The hotel in Zurich was super expensive- around 600-700 Euros/night. The other two in Switzerland were a little less- around 400 Euros/night. The hotels in Switzerland were not very "authentic" , as I opted to go more the luxury route. However, the Post in Mittenwald is very much the type of experience you'd find when staying in a small town or village. We've also gone up further north from Munich on a separate trip to Rothenburg (VERY touristy but unique and fun) and along the Rhine (Eltville-Erbach) to some of the wineries. We enjoyed Switzerland a bit more because we did alot of driving around the country and found that each area was gorgeous, yet different and unique. We did the big city thing in Zurich, the village thing in Interlaken, and in Luzern, we enjoyed walking around the lake and the city enjoying some of the architecture. We are also nerdy and LOVE cheese fondue, so we were on a fondue hunt :) We;re going to back to Europe around this time next year and at first considered a Rhine cruise, but realized we'd get more out of town/city/village hopping by train. We're starting in Hungary and ending in Munich to do a Christmas market tour!

Wow that will be fun, enjoy! Thanks for your help- would you say Germany is romantic enough for a honeymoon? Do you think I could do one or the other for uner 8,000 including airfare for the week?
  • I definitely think it's doable for $8K. You can estimate that airfare into Munich will run around $1k/person. Then, assuming you find some hotels under 400 Euros and then some may be over (probably most under, unless you really want to splurge), a week's worth of hotel is 2800 Euros. I have no idea what a car or train runs, but if you drive, gas is very expensive. Expect around $100 USD to fill a tank. As for romantic, I think everyone's definition of romantic is different. To me, romantic is enjoying a sunset on a secluded private island while sipping champagne. So, that's what we did for our HM. However, I definitely thought parts of our European trips were romantic, as well as interesting, fun, and adventurous!

Trains in Europe are awesome and very affordable. You might want to look into getting a rail pass if you're going to go to multiple countries: http://www.eurail.com/
